I'm in Southern California where gas is close to $5.00 a gallon. My husband expects me to figure out where we will be going for my birthday promptly. Normally, I could go anywhere I wanted, but this year that is not the case. Thanks for the reply.

Do you have children? When I'm off work and can't go on vacation- Here are some things we do:
Go to the state parks - hike, ride bikes, picnic, swim.
Go camping- either in the backyard or at a park (very cheap)
Visit with friends
Have movie nights or days :) Rent a bunch of movies and get some popcorn-- plan a day of it.
I'm sure there are a lot more things you can do :)

My children are grown; however, the younger one does stay here from time to time. We will be seeing a movie and see lots of pretty flowers. Thanks for the reply.

all those things you mentioned, set in the park and feed the birds, window shop, go out and visit with friends, do some dinners at home, or go out and eat or just have coffee with friends some where,
take in a play, if you are a church going to some of their activities, picnics, barbeques, pot luck dinners, lectures at the universities, go to plays, museums, festivals in your area, site see, botanical gardens and whatever else your city has to offer.

I'm going to check the botanical gardens, as think Bob and I could stroll through the gardens. Bob will be home for 4 days, so am looking to make this birthday not turn into a big expense. Thanks for the reply.

A lot of times there are free things to do in different cities. This site is full of free attractions, museums and more..

If you aren't close to any of those cities, you might check with your local library or chamber of commerce to see if they have links to free days at museums and such.

I get more holiday time than hubby does. On those occasions I spend the time just unwinding. No plans at all just do what I feel when I awake. I sleep late. Go to the parks and trails and go on long hikes. One day I went to the library and took out a book on crafts, then went to the craft store and did my craft. It was so relaxing. Before I know it the time is gone.

My husband has more holiday time than me. I wanted to go to Disneyland, but that is just to costly. I'm hoping to find something we can do together, but this is turning out to be harder than I originally thought. Thanks for the reply.
