He received his laptop today which he has saved for in anticipation of his going to university this year... It would not do anything! It booted up and then would freeze... unfreeze after several minutes only to freeze up again the moment he touches it. Several hours with dell customer service and no success - so they do a system restore thing and several hours again - he thinks it is finally going to work - but then goes to install drivers and he is back to square one... nothing works. the poor kid scrimped and saved to buy this computer and is just sick over it all.

Modestah, is it a new computer? Under dell warranty? I have several thoughts about this, but need so much information about the computer before i could begin to help you. My first thought it that it has so many start up programs running that the virtual memory is and memory is running out.... That is just one thought. If you want help or suggestions I would need to know the specs of the machine.

Dang that is a very nice machine.... Well best thing to do then is let Dell handle this. you do not want to void the warranty by letting anyone else work on it. Get back on line with Dell and set up for a tech to come and have a look at it at your home. You have plenty of memory so that is not an issue.

back on the phone today with Dell - this time the tech rep asked him to turn over the laptop unit and see if the fan was working - IT WAS NOT! the fan was absolutely stationary so that is probably the problem. sheesh - such a simple thing and this was the first it was thought of. son could not believe that HE did not think of it himself. they are sending a box which will be here in a few days - then repair the unit and send it back. hope it gets back here before we leave for our trip. too bad they won't just send a new comp in its place after they receive it.

if the laptop new, i think he should ask for his laptop warranty. maybe he can ask for full replacement to dell CS and show the laptop is not work well

I think he should reinstall the operating system. Whenever there are such problems then i used to format and install my os. use windows xp while using the operating system. May be this helps.

well that was the solution (eventually) of the tech on the phone.... it looked like it was going to work - until he started to install the drivers, then everything became blocked up again. *sigh* poor kid.

I've heard a lot of negative things about Dell lately. What a shame after waiting and saving so long. I know what that's like. I have a laptop too but I've had nothing but good luck. It's an LG. I hope the computer is up and running by now. Good Luck.

yeah, and dell used to be so highly regarded, just a year ago. it was funny, I said to him grandpa would love this! (this was before it was turned on) and he said no, grandpa did not want to buy a dell for some reason. He always bought toshiba or sony.

Its brand new then demand an outright replacement or better leave it to dell service center for a couple of days for full burn-in and thorough system check. Symptoms like like this will give you more problem in the long run.

this is what I was thinking too. he is so frustrated over it not working plus all the time wasted today. I think they should just replace it since it arrived in non working order.

i think it would be better to bring the computer's CPU to the store where he bought it... i think if it's really not working well, they will have to replace it.

I would take it back to the store where I bought it and have them exchange it or get your money back and go somewhere else. Sounds like they sold a dud laptop to your son.

they are having him send it back to dell (he ordered over the internet - no dell store any where remotely near to us) and then will send it back again when repaired. hope it will be a quick turnaround for him.

That must be so frustrating for him , no wonder he feels so bad! Since this was posted 3 days ago I am really hoping that the problem is now fixed or a new laptop is on its way already! I used to work for a company that manufactured computers and although everything was done to test and ensure they left the factory in perfect working condition sometimes there were faults in components and they would have problems with them when they reached the purchaser, I am afraid it's impossible to make them perfect no matter how many tests you do - there are some intermittent failures that won't show up in tests and checks! xxx

turns out that the fan was not working and they are sending a box for him to return it in - we figured it must have gotten shook up in shipment or something. this is the path it took Tennessee to Ohio - to Kansas City - to Springfield MO - to Kansas City - to Springfield MO (yes it repeated) and then to us.

Wow! I guess the handlers at one of these places weren't too careful! Hope he gets his replacement quickly and doesn't feel too disappointed! xxx

Hello Modestah, This problem with a brand new computer isn't a good sign at all. Just don't do anything on your own lest the warranty is null and void. Be on the offensive side and insist on replacement since it arrived in non-working condition, if they hesitate, threat to take them to court for EXTRA compensation for the hurt and tension it has caused to your son, not to mention yourself. They will do it. I have my laptop for over a three years now and it never ever had problems until last month, mostly related to its hard disk. But, given that how much I have used it, sometimes non stop for 5 days or even a week, it's not surprising. 3 years is already a good service time for a hard disk.

thank you Kamran for the advice and encouragement. I will have him read the replies when he gets home from work today. I think that your reply will give him the confidence to be assertive when he contacts dell again today.

You are welcome, Modestah! Sometimes, one needs to be assertive to get one's rights and proper treatment. Tell him that they will make excuses and would say that they will repair it for him, but he just needs to insist on replacement whatever they say. It's no fun having a machine that started like this.

Oh, I must mention that my hard disk is 'still' working fine, just had some bad clusters which are still under control, LOL! I hope you get your problem resolved!

I am so sorry! There is nothing more frustrating that a computer that doesn't work....especially if it is brand new! Once you get this fixed, a good site to use for future problems is worldstart.com. It is a computer guru site and there are so many talented folks that can get you through some pretty tough situations. They are some nice folks too...kind of like our mylot family!

That is such a bummer! When I got my new computer the motherboard went out on it right away. They say that when they ship them sometimes things get jiggled loose. I hope by now the problem is ammended!
