My father was born in Louisiana. I don't know what part and I never got a chance to meet him. He left when I was about two years old. He had some problems, one of which was Grand Mal Seizures. They were so bad that he was not able to drive. Last night, I watched a documentary called, "When The Levees Broke," A Spike Lee Film, referred to as "An American Tragedy."
A Caucasian friend of mine had the movie and thought that I should see it. She warned me that it would make me angry and it would make me cry. There was no way that she could have prepared me for what I saw. When Hurricane Katrina was happening, I heard little bits and pieces here and there, mainly on the internet.
I had not yet recoverd from seeing 911, 24/7, so I knew that I would not be able to watch such a tragedy on television. But when my friend recommended it, I felt obligated to watch it. Now, I am trying to stay calm but don't be mistaken. In my 38 years of living, I have never seen anything as horrible as what I saw last night. I am angered to the deepest part of my soul.
I am angry because they treated my people as if they were from a third world country. I am angry because President Bush does not give a care about my people. These people are my family, they are my roots. They are where I come from. So many of them looked like people in my family. They were hurting, full of despair and broken.
Lots of them died, waiting for the government to come and help them. Yet the "President" is spending billions to aid Iraq. He was on vacation and stayed on vacation when he heard what had happened. Where is the humanity in this. How dare he ignore hard working, tax paying citizens and allow their homes to become their watery graves.
People were scattered all over the place. Children separated from their parents, parents cut off from their spouses and forced in horror to watch their love one float away and die. People were shot and killed like they were criminals. Animals were shot dead, just for the heck of it. I can even begin to go into all the tragedy that took place on this day in American history.
I get so angry that I feel like I am going to explode. How can we take pride in a country that could care less about us. Has anything really changed for my people? Sure, we have a lot more priviledges, but we are steal treated as less than everyone else. I for one am going to start with myself and make a change in this ugly place we call the United States.

i completely agree with you on the aftermath of katrina being horrific. it was.. what i cant fully agree with, is that there were warnings of this storm.. and alot of people CHOSE to stay and put their children in danger. they CHOSE to ignore the warnings of this storm heading their way. arrogance.. "it wont happen to us" syndrome. i agree that the way bush handled the situation was deplorable.. but then bush is a deplorable person.. we really shouldnt be surprised by his actions being inhuman, he IS inhuman. one other thing i do not understand in yer post.. is why you felt the need to state that yer friend is caucasion.. it held no relevance to this topic or discussion at all..and was unecessary. if a white person mentions someone is black when it holds no relevance to the topic of the conversation.. we're racists for doing so. i can fully empathize with how yer feeling about the way yer people.. yer blood were treated.. i am consumed with the same rage when im faced with the slaughtering of the celts.. MY people.. MY blood.. because they wouldnt convert and bow under the christian regime.
