My husband was telling me that you can use an exercise ball as a chair and it will help you have better posture and help you develop your core muscles, my response was yeah right, just because google does it in their offices doesn't make it right.
But then he found me this article, where a teacher is using them to help the children focus better as it drains off some of their excess energy. You can read the full article here:

Now has anyone tried this? As I currently have back alignment issues and am terribly out of shape and do sit am amazing amount of hours at the computer, I thought I would give it a try. I bought a burst resistant ball in the size recommended for my height. I will let you know how it goes.

My back gets really sore if I bend it slightly while sitting, I think this would make me miserably sore.

I actually tried this for a while, and it does make a difference. While you are sitting there, you are not going to feel some amazing ab crunch where suddenly you look like Cindy Crawford(if only...). You will see and feel a difference if you use it consistently.
I don't know anything about the actual focusing part, but I'm assuming that was part of it as well. Your body knows that you will fall off if it doesn't work to keep you on it, and as the blood goes to the brain to tell you to not fall off the chair, it also works to help you learn and remember other things. Obviously that's the elementary school version of what's actually going on, but it's clearly shown to do some good.
And yet, as I type this I'm laying on the sofa...
