Congress questioning oil execs..

Congress is questioning the oil companies on their earnings and profits.. here's the irony, Senators and Congressmen make more money than the oil profits! If they'd allowed drilling in Anwar (under the frozen and icy tundra) ten years ago when it came up for review, we would not have the problems (price hikes) we are having now (congress, many say, is far more to blame than U.S. oil companies) and we would not be at the mercy of nations which hate western civilization.. Any thoughts?

The same story all over the world. Those in government including congressmen and senastors are usually to blame for what's happening to the country. But, if you think about it, its the people, US, who placed them there so does that mean We the people are nto blame? Here, Congress is questioning the executives of the company that generates and distributes electricity due to the high cost. The question is, those doing the questioning may not be so innocent or uninvolved.Another question is whether they are sincere in investigating or is it just another red herring to prevntn furher investigation of a biggert anomaly? That's the question really.

Um, no, Congress doesn't make more money than oil tycoons. I'm not aware of a billion dollar income for any congressmen, are you? It's not an issue of supply and demand either, which is what most people think. There is plenty of supply. It's called price gouging, oil exec's know that they can get more for the oil, so they continue to hike the price. Another problem - the majority of our oil does not come from counties that hate western civilization... unless something changed overnight and suddenly Canada hates us. There are plenty of places, including but not limited to Alaske, in the US where if we were allowed to, we could get oil. The biggest problem facing the industry is need for better technology so we can access more of this oil. However, even with the technology we have, there are plenty of places to get oil here in the US. And I don't necessarily blame Bush for this problem. Saying the Iraqi war was started over oil is naive, if you look at how much oil we get from Iraq it's clear that wasn't the case. However, I do think some blame does lie with congress as well as President Bush as to how long it's taken them to actually questioning the oil executives. BUT I don't think it's actually their fault the price has continued to inflate at an unreasonable rate.

Lisan, At the risk of your anger I must say that you are a little naive if you believe these congressmen and women spend millions of dollars to get elected to a hundred thousand dollar per year job if that was all there was in it for them! I do agree that there is some gouging going on and some of the "shortage" is artificially induced by the oil companies.

Lisan, Do you know that for a fact? These congressmen and women who spend years and years in the congress and senate literally control the destiny of most businesses in this country! From where it is environmentally safe or not to build factory X or whether business Z is in compliance with law Y.2! You get my meaning? This is where some serious palm greasing comes into play and these "trusted" elected officials that we pay way too much in the first place(I wonder how many would run if it paid minimum wage)take these payoffs without batting an eye! They create the tax laws to benefit who? Themselves of course! All of these examples and many many more are just the tip of the iceburg as to why this country is in the trouble it is in today and it can't be blamed on Bush, Clinton, Bush, Regan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, or Eisenhower! The blame is with the congress and the system they have put in place and we will continue to go downhill until the people we elect are fiscally responsible enough to operate our government like we try to operate our household budget! Could we get away with operating in the red for very long? How about 50 years?

I'm by no means saying congressmen and women aren't wealthy, Rodney. I'm saying they're not as wealthy as the oil execs.

It seem so simple when you writed, I wonder why so many cannot get it through their thick skulls. Everytime a gallon of gas is sold Government makes money. They did not build a refinery, nor did they mine it, but they fell like they have some God given right to make money off of it. Taxes is like you or me telling Bill Gates to give us a percent of all of his earning. Of course we did not create Microsoft but we deserve some of his money. It will always be ten years form now if we keep on waiting. Every other country around the world is domesticly producing their own oil(If they have oil) except us. Well we do some but not like we could if we open up ANWR and the off shore oil fields. Cuba is going to start drilling off their shore, but we cannot off of Florida amazing.

I'm glad someone already corrected you on your claim that Senators and Congressmen make more money than the oil profits. When one company's first quarter profits totaled $11 BILLION we sure better NOT be paying on Congress that much...lol! Also, it's always being brought up about Anwar but the truth is for the amount it would cost to drill there not to mention to transport the small amount of oil we get from there and the amount of time it would take to benefit at all from it, which would only last a few months at best it would hardly be worth it. I agree we need to become energy independent but that, certainly not alone, is not the answer. Annie

If these clowns let the oil companies drill in Anwar and drill off the coast of Florida and Califorina we would have more gasoline in our nations supply. The tree lovers wont't let us do anything that will help us get off of forgein oil. We are the dumbest country in the world who basically depends on countries who hate the United States for our energy demands.

NO! NO! NO! This is Bush's fault, right? I mean that is what every liberal on MyLot is saying! President Bush is the cause of every malady that has beset the United States in the last 8 years! What a crock of bull$hit! On a more serious note, it doesn't matter if we opened up ten oil fields the size of Alaska if we can't refine it into gasoline, the supply will still continue to decline! We need to get past the tree hugging environmentalists so we can build refineries! There hasn't been a new refinery built in this country in ages! With the demand for gasoline skyrocketing it is ludicrous to not build more refineries to keep up and lessen the strain on the American consumer!
