Parents lacking in responsibility?

I am always hearing of a parent that was not doing their job as a parent and a child dies or is abused or something else that is completely awful. Is it just me or are parents now a days completely lacking in their responsibilities? I am so sick of hearing on the news child left home alone catches house on fire, child left home alone shoots sibling, child accidently left in car dies. How are the parents not responsible for these actions? You have children you should take care of them. Why would you think you could leave a two, three, five or even nine year old home alone?
I have three children and have left my child that was 11 at the time home while I ran around the corner to get the mail and felt really unsafe doing this for the first time. If you can't take care of the child, couldn't you find it in your heart to give the child up for adoption? Are you really that selfish that you are more important than a child that didn't ask to be here in this world? If you really cared wouldn't you make sure your child had everything thing they needed?

I don't believe it's all parents today - there are a lot of very caring and conscientious parents out there who are very attentive to their children.
I do have a problem with all the cases that I hear of where people just "forget" that they have the child in the car, park in in the parking lot and go into work for the day. I just can't imagine how you could just forget that you have your child in the car with you.
I have sometimes wondered if they're just too busy talking on their cell phones or text messaging on their blackberries or whatever new device they're using these days - do they just get so intent on those things that they don't remember the child?

Very good point. I couldn't imagine leaving my crew in the car, but then they make way to much noise to forget they are anywhere.

Yes, they must have much quieter children than I've ever had! I supposed if the child was sleeping - but I still have a hard time with it.
There was a couple in St. Louis - both professional people - one a doctor and the other a college professor - and somehow their child got left in the car in the parking lot when it was VERY hot. Someone finally noticed, broke out the window, and called 911, but it was too late. There were never any charges filed against these people.
