Trellis Needed

Well my clematis has yet to flower or bud, but it is huge this year. The pole it is climbing is 4 feet tall. So I guess the clematis to be about 6 feet or taller actually. I was going to buy a trellis this year but, put it off due to the fact that last year the clematis was only a little bigger than this pole. So which is better, a steel trellis, a wire type, or the old fashioned reliable wood? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Steel will be there forever while wood looks really good. Wire is not as durable for the vines. There are also the composite ones that look like white painted wood, made out of recycled plastics, and last as long as the steel. That is what I used for a trellis for my jasmine and it looks really good.

Like everything else, the price probably depends on where you get them. If they have them at Wal Mart, then that will be cheaper. I like the quality of Lowe's, if you have one nearby.

I'd match the Skirting around the porch or what ever it is, I had a white clematis on my entry to the house in Oregon Used wood on both sides of the entry worked very well gave shade to the entry and a little shelter from the famous rain we used to get for 3 months. LOL! Have a good one GB! tdemex

If wood I was thinking a light colored wood. The white lattice and beige siding and the brown deck would match this color I think. This one is a violet clematis. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Mom always grew her clematis on a trellis made of rebar and painted white. I have it now with my roses. I like the look of a cedar wood. You left out the possibility of plastic that looks like wood, but I tend to shy away from them. I guess some of it depends on what your house looks best with.

Was it a fancy looking trellis or just rebar welded together? I'd love a sedar trellis. Someone else mentioned the plastic and that is one I thought of as well due to being cheaper I think. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

It is one of those fan shaped trellises. I do not know where she got it, my dad was a notorious junk collector. I will go out in the daylight and look it over. If the roses have not completely obscured it, I will post a picture.

My husbands mom used to grow roses for the rose show. She always used a wire trellis for her roses because it got kind of heavy while growing. We used to have a trellis also where we used to live. It was a wooden one though and it worked just fine for us. I think it all depends on how much weight will be climbing it and handing on it.

The Clematis doesn't weigh a lot so wood or plastic would support it well enough. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I would say to get which ever you prefer but I do like the looks of the wood ones the best. Also since I do see the lattice around there too in the picture either white or brown would look good. Can't wait to see the picture of what you end up getting.

I myself prefer wood but with the harsh winters here in Minnesota I would have to take it down each year to preserve the aoppearance. But... I hope it flowers soon. Last year it had I think 6 flowers only and was more than half this size. So maybe a dozen this year. Who knows? Anyone? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

How about the white vinyl lattice for a trellis? No maintainance and not easy to break/bend.
