i think you may find talking about general information useful in first meeting... get to know a person, what he does, etc.

For a married person meeting another married person, they would usually talk about their kids. For job seekers who get acquainted with one another during job application/interviews, they talk about their alma mater or their previous employment. But of course, it could be anything. It really depends. Sometimes people would even talk about religion even during their first encounter. I do that sometimes.
