Help Needed! Plastic Wrap

United States

Can anyone give me any tips on how to get the rolls of plastic kitchen wrap to tear off evenly. Then how to stop it sticking to itself before I can put it over the item I want covered? This has been driving me crazy for years! So any ideas would be appreciated and it would also help me to stop cursing like a sailor!!

Hi Sweets I have found if you pull the wrap out flat on the table put the item to be wrapped on the plastic. Roll it over to wrap and while keeping the tension on it cut it with shears or a knife. Trick is to keep the tension on it. oxoxxoxoxo

Hmm... have you tried tearing it slower and with both hands? I think it will help too if you are tearing off a flat surface. Place the roll on a flat surface like a table top or something.

No I haven't as I need one hand to hold the box steady but I'll try anything once.

If I were you, I would put something heavy enough to hold the box and wrap so that I can remove and tear it with 2 hands.

Usually if you purchase the generic and store brands they make the packaging a little less sturdy and it doesn't seem to want to tear well. I've never had problems with actual "Saran Wrap" brand but every other brand I purchase (usually so much cheaper it's worth it) seems to have the issue. Also, did you know that at the end of the box there are little tabs to push in that will hold the roll in place while you use it? I never knew that!!!! It applies to foil, plastic wrap, waxed paper, etc.!!!! Check your box on each end. It really does help to hold it in place. That may help a bit.

Maybe it is because I do try to buy the cheaper store brands. I did know about the tabs, thanks.

Two very interesting things about plastic wrap.... Keep it in the freezer. It rolls off better, tears better and doesn't stick (as badly) if you keep it cold. Another interesting fact.....did you know there are tabs on the box of plastic wrap (and foil), at each end, that you can push in to keep the roll from coming out of the box? Who Knew!? I got an email from a friend of mine a few days ago that spoke of the tabs at the end of the box. After all these years, I immedidately went into the kitchen to see if the box of plastic wrap had tabs. Sure enough, there they were! All these years and I didn't know about the tabs at the end of the boxes. I looked on my generic box of foil. They are there too! Hmmm - What will they think of next?

Hmmm you said "as badly" so it still sticks to itself. I did know about the tabs. I am going to try keeping it in the 'fridge as others are saying that helps.

It seems like the faster I pull when I rip it, the straighter it turns out. I've never perfected a method for not having it stick to itself. After getting frustrated enough, I'll just give up and use plastic storage containers with lids instead.

I very rarely have this problem hen unless someone takes it out of the freezer which is where I keep it! I know it sounds daft but it honestly make it behave so much better and leaves it much easier to control - you should give that a try! xxx

This is a problem for many I think. I usually pu;; it out directly over what I am covering and then use kitchen shears to cut it. There just doesn't seem to be an efficient way to use the stuff without a lot of aggravation, and so many people would say why do you continue to use it...lol.

I think this is probably what I am going to try first. Thank you.

Haha, good question. I'm in the same boat, lol. It doesn't tear straight off, even if I use the sharp rip device that comes with the package. It bunches together, and not only the piece I want to use but also the beginning of what is left on the roll:( No matter what I try. I have never been able to make a straight cut, even with other cutting devices. Sorry!
