How can I go on?

Last Friday I gave my two week notice at work. I got a job offer I couldn't refuse! I love my job, I love what I do and who I work with. But...... I can't pay my bills. So, I get this offer making 3 times the money with full benefits doing the same thing I am now. So on Friday I tendered my two week notice. I wasn't the only one. In the last week, 8 positions have opened there. I feel absolutely awful! So, for these two weeks, I have to work feeling wretched!
Have you ever given notice? How did you finish your time? I get funny looks from the Executive Director but I know that in the end i will be better off.

I think that once you are in your new position for awhile, you will forget about feeling bad that you left your former (now current) employer. Doing the same job, but getting paid enough to pay your bills (and probably more), you will realize that you did the right thing and that your former employer was not being fair to you by paying you so little, when your new employer can pay you so much.
Just try not to let anyone's "funny looks" bother you. If they cannot pay you enough to pay your bills, they should realize that they have a problem, especially when so many others are leaving at the same time.
I have given notice, yes. The only problem I had in the two weeks left at my old job was trying hard to not leave sooner! When you are feeling bad about leaving, just think about the pay and benefits of your new, upcoming job. It should help you to not be bothered by the looks you're getting.

A friend of mine once remarked that he would love to be able to resign and tell his boss what he could do with the lousy job. He had the "feeling" that it would really make his day. Unfortunately he was never in a position to do so and I can't tell you if it did feel good for him.
Here in Holland you can tender your resignation and if you haven't used your vacation up yet you can use those days instead of having to work for another couple of weeks. That is a very practical solution to a situation that may be "sticky" or unpleasant to say the least. What I mean to say is that even though you are still sitting out your time, your employer knows you would rather be somewhere else and that isn't a good atmosphere to work in. As you yourself say you get funny looks. I bet that's an understatement. If it were a reasonable employer then possibly they would offer to let you go sooner if they found a replacement earlier on. Okay sure you may be out of a weeks pay but having a few days off before you start your new job isn't something to sneeze at either.

I think that you gotta do what you think it would be better for you and your future. You don't have to worry about your old job although you love that job. I guess you would never think you're gonna stay on the job you love forever right? You have to move on, so everyone does. I wish I can move to new job but I just cannot do it right now. I am now in bottleneck situation. If I quit my current job and move to new one, they will still pay me for the annual leave I have accrued. However I don't think the new job will give me a month leave starting this mid November. Most of companies do not like to give any leave if the employee has just recently started or have less than a year working in that job. It is still quite possible but it would be hard. If I stay with my current employer I can take one month leave. I would quit my current job after I return from overseas and given that I already have a new job so I won't be jobless in between.

Hey don't feel bad for given your two weeks notice and going to another job that you'll be doing the same thing and makeing better money and full benefits. If this was me I'd be astatic and not feeling bad about leaving my current job you'll be makeing it better else where. I haven't given my two weeks notice but want to so bad for I just can't stand the place and how they run things. I know theirs nothing else out there as of right now that is going to pay me what I am makeing now for I have checked and that is the only thing stopping me from giveing my two weeks. I hope you can let go of the wretched feeling and start counting down the days for a new and improved start for yourself. I wish you the best of luck and let us know how it goes take care.

8 positions opened? is it because of employee departures or internal promotions? or the company is expanding?
giving notice to the company is a great idea, that means the company will have time to adjust, and look for a replacement so operations will not be affected big time with departures.
however, if the opening are due to key positions being vacated, the management should see that there is a reason. and should address that.
employee satisfaction is a strategic measure of a company's performance.

I remember when I had given my two weeks notice for a job that I absolutely loved. Believe it or not it was in the fast food industry. I loved everyone I worked with. It was a small business, so we were like a little family. And everyone just expressed how they were going to miss me. If the people at your job really cared about you and what you need to do for you they would be fine. The other people quitting prior to you is none of your concern. It happens. They had other things to get done for themselves to. Those dirty looks that you get is just coming from the individual not living your life and walking in your shoes. So guess what, until they can be you and see what you need done, don't pay attention to those looks. You're actually a good worker to even be giving notice. So I know you enjoy what you do, because when I could care less about the people I'm leaving behind I say nothing.

do not feel guilty you know who should feel guilty is your boss. I mean hello? Are they seeing the pattern that they are not paying the staff enough, good staff, not paying good money to good staff is a huge mistake. If you are going to a job in which you do the same exact thing and making more money to be able to make ends meet? Then YES you have to fend for yourself and your family, if they are not going to come up to help you then it is their problem not yours. You are kind enough to work out the remaining 2 weeks that is great of you....they are lucky to have at least that!

I tend to stay for years at a job and so I am like family by the time I leave. Yes, it is hard but in these hard times you have to do what you have to do. I am also keeping my eyes open for a better paying job because I need the money and I also would like different hours. My boss understands very much and has told me that if he could afford to give me a raise that he would. Times are tough and he just can't. So far, I haven't found anything that matches my pay but if I did, I would just have to take it. It would be with a heavy heart as well but it would be the right thing for my daughter and I. Don't feel too bad. You are leaving on good terms anyway. They just don't want to lose you. Good luck with your new job!

Firstly let me congratulate you! Good for you. Don't feel ashamed in anyway. If they wanted you to stay, they could have been treating you better and offered you a decent pay with benefits. Don't let them make you feel bad in anyway. I know saying is not the same as doing, because I too would feel bad. But it is a step up. Keep in touch with your friends. You deserve it! What does it tell you that 8 people have or are leaving?

i think you have to do what is best for you and not look back or feel bad about it. if your employer felt they would be better off without you for some reason they would not think twice about getting rid of you. this is business and you deserve to be paid well and you deserve benefits so go for it and be happy.

Hi laglen, just do your work for the last weeks in your office and never have a guilt feeling about leaving the company and colleagues. Of course you will miss their company since your friends there but life has to go on...for you, it's for the better. Never mind about the funny look from your Executive Director, it won't do you any good. They may be losing a very good employee in you but they cannot do anything since you were offered three time of your current salary and better benefits which your current company cannot give or make a counter-offer to you. Just move on, make a good exit, endorse properly, and leave your contact number to your close friends so you could still keep in touch. Congratulations on your new job!

You need to do what is right. You need a high paying jobs to pay up your bills. But you have to tell your superior or director that you have no choice and willing to train the person that will replace you, that is the only thing that you can do for them...

Congrad... on the new job I know that was a good move for you and that your happy about it. Don't you dare feel bad about doing better. That is something you should be glad about. No, have not give notice; just quite. But you have a good time at your new job and good luck.

I think you did the right thing, even though you feel as though you are getting funny looks off the people you are leaving. Think of it this way, if they really wanted you to stay, they would increase your wage, but they are not, which shows that they are only interested in themselves, therefore you should only be interested in yourself too.

Yes I have, but I never did it when I enjoyed my job and had many friends there. Why would one place pay 3 times more for the same job, that would be my first, alarm that something was really wrong. Either one company is ripping off thier employees or one is going to go broke. Don't worry time goes by quickly, do you have any comptime comming if you do I'd use it and leave early. As a manger when someone gives notice I like to get them outta there ASAP, to stop any mass defections, or negetive talk around the area your in! If not just hold your head high and ride it out. Good Luck to ya! tdemex

What you are doing is best for you. You are a good staff, you love your present work but doesn't compensate enugh. Its normal...employee will look for a good job that pays well...so why stay if you have that once in a lifetime chance. Always in heart that you are not the owner of the company and you have your own needs to attend. Love your work but never give your life, thats what i learned from my work experience.
Spend your remaining days with laughter and socializing with your officemates. In that way they feel that you will miss them when your no longer working there.Have fun...ignore the funny looks of your director(he just got jealous hehhe just joking.
Congrats and Goodluck... Give your best and love your new job and be friendly.
