Uses for Pinecones?

We have a tree at the top of the village that produces the biggest pinecones I've ever seen. We normally collect the pinecones as fire starters, but it seems such a waste in the case of these whoppers. It would be lovely to be able to use them in some sort of craft project, but my mind is blank. Does anyone have any ideas?

If they're the nice big ones that I'm thinking about, why not bag a bunch of them and put them up for sale in eBay a few weeks before Christmas?

Collect them and soak them with cinnamon oil for fragrance. Wal Mart sells them every year.

Really? It's quite astonishing the things that people buy which they could make themselves for pennies.

Now that really is a good idea! I'm sure there are loads of crafters who'd be able to make use of them.

I saw this GIANT pinecone that was frosted with white glitter and large beads and made into little fat Christmas trees. This was about a foot tall cone.

I have seen them sprinkled with glitter and with beads for ornaments, like little Christmas trees. Lay it on the side, make a turkey head out of paper, and fan out either paper feathers or actual ones in back for turkey tail feathers. I would probably run wire around the back and wire them onto a wreath. That is all I can come up with right now. Fill them with peanut butter or suet, cover with bird seed, hang as feeders for wild birds. Okay, now I am done.

Glad you liked the idea, the birds will, too. Thanks for best response.

I love the bird feeder idea. That's a great one. the kids always make bird seed cakes at Christmas time as a present for Grandad. These would make a great change. Cheers!

I feel pine cones aren't just for Christmas. You can collect them, find baskets at the thrift shops and make arrangements with roses, baby's breath and some rose oil mixed in with the filler so that it would be a wonderful smelling arrangement...I use silk roses. You can modify it with other flowers or natural dried botanical items so that you can have it to suit many tastes. I did see some wonderful door hangers done with three pine cones suspended from a gold or silver tone cord with a big red and green plaid ribbon bow at the top. Also, you can place the pine cones in a basket with clear mini lights strung through the arrangement so that it can be plugged in and it makes a beautiful arrangement. The one my mom bought (and paid a horrible price for it too...it was around $50!!!)had pine cones, baby's breath, lights and fake red apples in a bushel basket (or apple basket).

I also saw a crafts person who had cut apart the pine cones and made different animals and birds with the leaf parts. They were very cute and sold like crazy at the sale. She painted eyes and other features on them, and with the birds she fashioned little feet for them out of wire..I don't remember what the beaks were made of, but she put them on pieces of drift wood etc and they were very good sellers!

That certainly sounds interesting, but it also sounds quite fiddly. I'm not sure I'm up to it!

I do like the idea of incorporating them into something with little lights. Many of my friends use fairy lights as home decor all year round, so I shall have to start taking a closer look at their arrangements and see if I can can pick up some more ideas. Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh I always collect pinecones here at Christmas time and make table displays up out of them, I usually will spray with gold or silver paint and then put a large candle in the middle for the meal table. I also spray individual ones for the Christmas tree as decoration too. The lovely pine fragrance of them burning on the fire is lovely though. I use orange peel too for this effect. In fact another idea would be to spray some essential oil on them and put in a basket as an air freshner and also add in dried orange peel and flower petals. Have fun with it but they do sound too lovely to burn I agree. Ellie :D

So many pine cone ideas seem to have Christmas as their theme. I suppose they've just got a Christmassey feel to them.

I used to have a lovely Christmas decoration that was lost in my cross-country move. It was a bit pine cone that was made to look like a reindeer, with googly eyes glued on, antlers and a smile. I always hung it in the entrance to the hallway from the living room. You could use them that way but fire starters are a good use, too.

These particular ones just seem to be too big and good to use as mere fire lighters. I think they are destined for greater things! It's funny, every suggestion so far has been for Christmas!

Pine cones do seem to lend themselves to Christmas somewhat, don't they?
