We have a couple of venison roasts in the freezer and I was wondering how you cook yours? Do you pop them in the oven or do you fix on top of the stove like a pot roast? How does it cook up--nice and tender or a bit tough?

When I have cooked them before it was in the crockpot and I used barbecue sauce, simmered all day, and it was tender from the slow cooking and the sauce.

Karen I have tried a couple of times to cook a venison roast, they always come out so stringy and tough for me. I do like ground venison, I mix in a pound of breakfast sausage to 2 pounds of ground venison and the burgers come out wonderful. Venison has very little fat, and is very very lean meat so you have to add a bit of fat to tenderize it. I just have had no luck with roasts.

I have never tried venison, or any out-of-the-norm meats [I'm not very fond of red meat in general], but I have seen people make burgers out of it. I have also often seen people cook it on the grill like steak.

I haven't had any venison for a while but when I have cooked it I put it in the crock pot just like a beef roast, and it comes out really tender. I just throw in some potatoes and carrots, maybe an onion depending who I am cooking it for. I just love it that way!

Mmmm...venison! The very mention of it makes my mouth water! Yum! I have to admit, I've never cooked it myself, but I remember my mom making it in the oven like a roast, along with potatoes and carrots and onions. Here is a website that features southern food. Maybe there is a recipe there that can help?
