Spring Cleaning

Well here in Minnesota we have had week after week of rains and torrential rainfalls. Some areas have been flooded as they have
all over the midwest. Now we have a lot of Oak trees in the neighborhood and this is the time of year for their buds, helicopters, to fall. The streets are covered with them. This is
a shot of the Highway Department shoveling them up to clear the sewers and drains to avoid a possible flood and or backup of the sewer system in my city. I had cleared mine out recently as it
is right near the end of my driveway and if left there to clog
the sewer, the water runs up my driveway. Does your cities or counties etc crews clear out your sewers ever so often or not?
Yeah I know, a terribly fuzzy shot but it was taken in a hurry
and wanted it for the discussion. Went back to take another shot and they were done and gone. HAHAHA!!

Ummmmmmmm......Oaks and helicoptors? Since when do acorns develop this early and fall like helicopters?
Think you got it backazzwards, Grandpa Bob. MAPLES have the helicopter seeds in the spring and OAKS have the acorns in the fall.
As for the cleaning crew keeping the sewers cleaned from them, I have no clue being I live out here in the boonies and we don't have sewers here. Just septic tanks.

Consider yourself slayed.
Your maple might not be spitting off helicopters yet cause it's not old enough to produce them.

We live on a private road with about 6 other families. Nobody cleans up here except us. I know all about those "helicopters", believe me! We have a big ol' oak tree right in the front yard, several in the woods beside our house and on on our property on the other side of the road. Yep, cleanup time around here means we get out our own shovels. Sigh! We don't have storm drains, but if the ditches get full of anything, the water floods our property. We have to make sure it runs into the stream or the lake.
I'm just getting used to country living... there are a lot of perks to it, but a lot of extra work involved, too.
Take care, Grandpa Bob!2 people like this

The grandkids love those helicopters but there seems to be a million of them around here this spring. There are literally piles of them along side the curbs of the raods near me. I have never seen them this bad in the 5 years we've owned this house. I love the barter system up at my dads farm. I haven't done that for ages but it was great when I did. before the kids were born I'd help the tater farmers and get hundreds of pounds for free. then at the beef farm I'd get a side of beef cut for 25 cents a pound. I would love to live at the farm but my wife is a city girl and hates it up north.

I am not sure if the city cleans the sewer lines, I have a feeling out here in the country it is up to us to do something like that you know. My town is so small that the residents basically do the things that need to be done.

Rural areas and towns etc usually hire outside contractors for clean up like this. Depends on the size and budget of the town etc I guess. Up north at the farm there are no sewers near the place. The nearest neighbor is about 3/4 of a mile away. The towns population is 218 or less. HAHAHA!

Our city workers do as little as possible it seems around here when it comes to things like that. I'm sure they do clean them out ever so often though but usually they wait until it is already too late and flooding. They are even talking now about picking up our trash just once a week instead of twice a week.

The city I live in has about 61,000 residents so it's not really a small city. they do not want the hassle nor exspense of a huge flood water clean up so they do a goodf job actually all year long as far as keeping the city clean in all ways. We do not have city pick up of garbage. It's all done by privately owned companies. Has been for years here. I can't really recall the last time any city here had the city do the garbage collection.

I don't know if they clean around the drains here, I haven't noticed any activities but I would think they'd have to clean the debris somewhere down the line!
We have those helicopters here, I have great fun playing with them just as I did when I was little.

I still do as well. It's fun watching them twirl
to the ground. I am always picking out their growths
from my lawns each spring and fall. Grrr!

They would do declogging of course but not after the flood has eat up the streets. Late reaction, as always.

We live out in the country right off of the expressway and we do not have alot of the amenities that we did when we lived in town. We don't have a crew that comes through to clean anything up around here. It is awful. The community around here is responsible to take care of things on their own if they want anything done here, it seems. The county we live in, is supposedly the poorest county in Indiana. I wander why we have the highest taxes here though? Many raods here do not even have street signs. Alot of them are still gravel and no pavement. Many are washed out and rutted too. We had no clue about this county when we moved here ten years ago. We love our home but what a big mistake for moving here. There is nothing here and they want nothing ever to be added here or we would have it.

WOW! If you hadn't mentioned Indiana, stephcjh, I would of thought you were living in Hopkins Park that is right on the other side of the state line here in Illinois. The town just south of me. Their roads can be described more as sand than gravel with ruts galore and not many stop signs. They don't have a grocery store either, just a gas station. The folks in Hopkins Park end up with broken down cars/trucks all the time, specially in the winter cause the roads are in so bad shape. We drove along some of the roads there and saw alot of trailers and houses with tarps over the roofs cause they can't afford to fix them. I saw one trailer I swear was being used as a shed but, nope, someone was actually living in it. You can tell the houses that have working families in them and the ones that don't just by the shape they are in and the condition of the yards. Sadly, there are more in dire need of repairs than there are in great shape.

Hello dear Grandpa Bob. I wish that you had enjoyed your spring cleaning. Usually we have our spring cleaning before the Spring Festival comes, but of course, we still have some cleaning days for the thorough cleaning in the house...
