Semi-newbie & un-'puter savvy! I NEED HELP!

I have no idea how to put a PICTURE up fpr my avatar, & I'm sooo bored with the generic default one. It looks friendly enough, but has all the personality of raw buscuit dough.
Can SOMEONE be kind & walk me through how to choose a photo (preferably one of my own, off MyLot), & how to put it up for my avatar?
Pretty please with sugar on top?

Now why would I want to type out how to go about changing your avatar when someone has done helped you already? lol

Well, whenver someone here is asking for help with something and the post is already several days old by the time I get to it, I usually will check out the post first to see if anyone responded and if they were able to help before I insert my own input. lol
