In today's paper, there is a chart about who spend the most on gas in our metro area per week. Even the worst car with the longest drive (158 miles per DAY) spends $207.20 in an SUV that would get 15 MPG. The best - Hybrid at 51 MPG - spends $60.90. The average commute - 62 miles per day - would be $81.39 and $23.90 respectively. These numbers are based on $3.97 a gallon. The paper chose one car from: hybrid, economy, luxury and SUV categories and used the AAA cost estimator for the costs.
Here is the link to the chart that shows what car was chosen: http://blog.nola.com/graphics/2008/06/what_do_you_pay_for_your_weekl.html
My husband drives roughly 100 miles a day and fills his tank every four days for about $55. He has a high performance car and can only use premium gas. We do not complain about how much gas costs or how much he spends a week on gas. We knew that when we bought his car that it would be expensive to put gas into, but we bought a fairly fuel efficient car to compensate for the cost of gas.
How accurate do you feel that the numbers above are?
Based on the numbers above, do you think people should start looking for new jobs if their commute is not worth their pay?

It is over $4.00 per gallon here in Indiana. I don't know how people are still affording to pay it and pay their bills and eat now. It is rediculous. My husband used to drive about 100 miles per day for work also until he lost his job last year. now he works close to home but makes alot less money. We both are working seven days a week to try and make up for the loss. The numbers above may be a little bit outdated for alot of areas now. People should work close to home if they can to try and save on gas expenses.

Well gas is not that high here for regular. I filled up about 2 weeks ago and regular was about $3.82. Yesterday when we stopped at Sams, premium was $4.01, regular was $3.79. Gas prices shot upto about $3.97 for regular 3 weeks ago and have been gradually dropping.

hello there sedel1027,
I agree with you that today's gas prices are soaring up high so fast! and it already makes people crazy!
and I kinda bit understand how people who drive cars feel even though Im only 15 and Im not yet allowed to drive. Before the price of gasoline here in our country was only about 35 pesos or so and that was only 3-4 months ago but now its almost 60 pesos!!
gosh! my parents used to take me and pick me up from school before but now they insist on letting me ride the train home to save money. I guess this is a BIG problem for the whole world!
If this thing doesn't stop increasing I guess sooner or later we would notice that fewer cars would be heading out on the road and people would rather walk, ride their bicycles or maybe just ride the bus or train to work. And I guess thats also a good for our environment cause it would lessen the pollution.
So, I guess this things has also its pros and cons..
lol
^_^
