i wrote two now what?

i have written two novels and i have the proposal almost done so now what? i have decided to go through an agent because you can get into better companies to publish through but i dont know exactly how to pick an agent or what they look for.. any tips?? do people usually end up waiting for years before they get any luck?? im afraid that by the time it gets published that some of the technology that i mentioned will be out of date =(
