The answer lies in the movement of cosmic energy. When we intend something strongly, our intentins get registered in the ether and manifests in our lives sometimes in the future. The stronger the intention (prayer) is let out into the ether constantly, the more the chances of its manifestation. This simply is how prayer works. Gruop energy functions better than individual energy. That is the reason so much importance is given to words like co-operation, joint effort, etc. It is to harness collective energy of people. Prayers funtion on this premise often with miraculous results.

yes, you're right. that's all about concentrate our mental energy to things (anything) we wish to get. it can be prayer, meditation, other metaphysic effort or just strongly concentrate our mind. it spend our mental energy to get what we wish (can be the material things or other subtler things like peace etc).
that's why spiritual aspirants are not encouraged to pray. we should spend our entire energy and time to achieve our real goal, our ultimate goal, which is getting self realization, being united with supreme consciousness ("god"). the ultimate goal takes our entire physical, mental and spiritual energy, yes it's worth pursuing. spending our mental energy to pursue worldly things will only slower our journey.
