I haven't sewn anything since grade school when I took a home economics class, but I am interested in getting a sewing machine and learn to sew. What tips would you have for a beginner seamstress?

Learn all you can about your machine before you take it home or find a class to help you learn your machine. I used my mom's machine when I was younger, but my first new machine took me a lot of frustration to figure it out! If you don't get easily frustrated, you could probably miss that step, but it's enough to turn most people off. Enjoy your new hobby! It can be so rewarding.

I am probably going to get a used machine at a thrift store or from e-bay. I need it to be cheap. So I will not be able to learn before I bring it home. I am more of a hands on learner anyways. I try a few times before getting it right. I do get frustrated, but that's the way I've taught myself many skills. I may not be a pro at everything I do, but most of what I do is just for my family anyways.

Cool! I completely understand about the cheap part. I got mine from a consignment store for about 1/4 of retail price, but I know more about it from the time I spent cursing and taking it apart than any class could teach me! Some people aren't as hands-on and patient, and I didn't know if you were. Good luck!

Yes hands on, but no on patient, lol. But I'll start with some designs that it doesn't really matter if I mess up too much, until I get the idea of what I'm doing.

Buy cheap fabric to start with so that you can practice things without having to worry about cost much. My other tip would be, once you get to where you feel comfortable using more expensive fabrics, buy more expensive thread. My favorite thread is German thread. The quality makes a difference, it's stronger and your items will last a lot longer and hold up to use.

i was the same way. i started off sewing things by hand to get an idea of sewing. i was new to sewing on the machine. i took my time and read the instructions on how use it. i learned from using simplicity paper to make a dress. u can find it in your local department store in the section where they have the fabric. it came in different sizes. i chose what size to make it in. i made my very first dress. i made an outfit for my teddy bear, so it wouldn't get spots or dust on it. i did that based on idea that popped in my head.. the point i am try to make is that u can do the same thing as i. stay focused. if u fail the first time. don't worry u will do better the next time. u know learning to sew on the machine was real challenge. i know where u are coming from. i would advise u to read the instructions on the machine. take your time. if u get frustrated, take a breath, go for some air, and try again. since then i have made pajama pants and pillow slips on the machine. i am getting better all the time. u will get better too, so dont give up,

my grandmother taught me to sew when i was a little girl and i never grew out of the love of sewing the only tips that i can really give you are start out easy dont take on a project that is too hard for a beginner or else you will get discouraged and may give up the art of sewing and practice makes perfect the more you sew the better you will get at it the first project that i did was sewing a stuffed teddy bear and now i can sew the most elaborate dresses it may help if you take some sewing classes at hobby lobby also
