Volunteering at a Shelter

I was looking up shelters around me, actually hoping to find a job. But none of them had real job listings, only volunteer oppurunities....so I figured I'd just look at it, at least. There is one shelter that listed some types of volunteers they need, and one is dog walker.Basically you just get to take the dogs out and play with them. And the shelter said that they allow their volunteers just to show up when they can, and can just hang out with all the animals. That sounded pretty good to me...I mean, I was looking up jobs because my work right now is stressing me out. But now I think maybe being able to just go to a shelter and spend some time with the animals will help relieve somne of that stress. So I emailed the shelter, telling them a little about myself. So they know I work at Petsmart, and that I'm already around dogs and cats all the time. And they know I work nights, so my scedule is a little tight. I think everything will work out okay though!

Well good luck to you. I have volunteered at a kennel, and I work with a rescue group. I love animals. It is so rewarding to work with them. I am sure you will really enjoy being with the dogs.

Well I didn't hear back from the shelter about volunteering :( But now I found a job I think I'll like at the Humane Society near my house. So I sent an application and I'm really hoping they hire me...because my current job is driving me up a wall! lol.

Volunteering can be a great way to get your foot in the door. You may also want to look at local vets for vet assistant positions, if you are looking to make the jump from Petsmart. Oh, and Associations of Zoos and Aquariums has job postings that may be of interest.

Yeah I think I'd like volunteering. But I still haven't heard back from the shelter so i don't know if that's going to work out. I did find a job posting for the Humane Society though. They are looking for someone to clean rooms, exercise the dogs/spend time with the cats and critters, feed them....that's basically what I do now lol. So I sent in my application today! :) I don't think I could ever work in a vets office x.x I'm just not good with the surgery's and blood lol. Same reason I could never be a nurse/doctor :P My friend actually applied to a zoo, I was thinking about it-I know I would love to work with elephants and the predators-but I wasn't sure if I would be up to it just yet! Thanks wilson! :)
