Silverlight

I was looking for some video of the Olympic trials the other day and found them on a site. When I clicked to watch them, I was told I needed to download Silverlight in order to watch them. I have never heard of Silverlight, so I x'ed out. What is Silverlight? Do any of you have it? Can it be trusted?
