Use coupons when it will make the product cheaper than generic
Check the mark down racks and bins always
Unplug appliances, computers, TVs, etc., when you're not using them to avoid paying for "phantom loads."

be careful what you shop for and when you shop and also where you shop. i pretty much shop for clothing at thrift stores and last week, i stumbled upon our favourite thrift store having a half off sale. watch the papers - old navy had their flip flops on for a dollar a pair on saturday (here in ontario, canada)...

Shop discount stores, clearance rack. We have a program here that is through Catholic Charities, it is called Share Colorado. You can buy a package of foods, fresh veggies, meats and canned goods. The value is about $100+ and you pay $25. Check and see if there is one near you.

One of the tricks that I use is to pay myself first. I have direct deposit and I have part of my pay going to a special account for emergency and another part going toward retirement. What is left is what I can spend on bills, food and other things I need. I also have a change container in my room. Everytime I need to by something I always keep the change and simply dump it in the container. You'll be suprised how much money you can accumulate that way! Coupons! I can't say enough about them!

Pay yourself
Eat out less often.
Make meatless meals a couple times a week to cut back on food costs.
Eat the leftovers - what you don't eat if you have pets use as dog/cat food
Buy generic items - theres coupons for generic items in my area as well as for brand name
Use coupons!
Don't forget to use the "gas dollars" or "superbucks" some gas stations give you for filling up.
Remember to use your airmiles and other store memberships for discounts.
Shop clearance and sales. i don't buy clothing that isn't on sale unless its underwear or socks and absolutely needed.
Unplug appliances, computers, TVs, coffee makers and such they draw power even when not turned on
Turn you heat down at night and when you aren't home. I leave my AC and fans off during when I'm not home.
Make home made foods - prepackaged foods always cost more and don't taste as good.
Use old fabrics to make things out of - dog toys, clothings, quilts, rags etc
Don't take money with you to work if you are bad for sneaking out for extra snacks or lunch out even if you brought something with you.
Carpool to work
Drive less, walk or bike more often.
Find FREE things to do rather than going to high priced movies or other events.
use the library for books and movies
When you want something write it in book...wait a month and THEN see if you still want/need it and purchase it.
Make a list before you shop and stick to the list. Even better make a list and have someone else get it for you that wont stray from the list then you cant go ooo cookies or ooo that looks yummy.

Excellent advice! I especially like the one about writing something you want in a book and waiting a month and seing if you still want/need it. I have done that with a Wii Fit, right now it seems like I will be getting one.
The only thing I would add is shop around, some things can be found so much cheaper if you research into different shops/ providers. This is particularly true when it comes to insurance, utilities and clothes. Try the library for CDs,DVDs and books. It is far too easy to walk into Blockbuster see a sale and buy 4 DVDs for £25. Ask yourself if you would get them all if they weren't on sale? If not then you are throwing away money that you wouldn't ordinarily.
Watch how you do your grocery shopping, make sure you don't waste any food. Many people are now growing their own food- this can be very fulfilling and healthy.
