Milk jugs going green?

Has anyone tried the new gallon milk jugs from Walmart or Sams club? Seems they are cheaper to ship, better for the environment and milk comes fresher inside. So, they've lowered the price you pay for the milk. What do you think of them? I don't drink milk, but the container looks a little odd.

I'll prolly never be trying them because I only buy my milk from Oberwise Dairy which uses 1/2 gallon glass jars for their milk. I pay a small deposit and get it back when I bring the empty jars back. The milk tastes so much better from Oberwise along with their famous homemade ice cream. If any of the glass jars are no longer usable, they simply recyle them.

I think that would be nice. My area no longer recycles glass, and I really hate that. We use to recycle glass, but not plastic. I was so bothered by that, then got excited when plastic recycling became available. But glass went away instead. I have had the pieces of my glass table in the trunk of my car for about 5 years now. I don't want to throw it away, so I guess it will stay there until we can recycle glass again.

Some things just made me want a bang my head up against a wall. I'm not a milk drinker and hadn't been for along time although I love cereal. I drink soy milk and I drink it from cardboard containers rather than from plastic jugs.
I can understand how somebody too would be so health conscious would be so environmentally unconscious as to buy products that are made from plastic. Anything that is made from plastic is oil; end of story.
I go on and on about the price a gas and oil and everything like that that's gonna be for another post.
Two things about Walmart-
1. Have you noticed that the new Wal-Mart logo? It looks more like an energy logo than it does of a retail chain and the dash in Walmart is gone hmmm…
2. Has anyone notice that the plastic bags that Wal-Mart uses have become thinner? Is it just me, is it just my imagination…
Now that Wal-Mart is not paving the way anymore as a retailer or as grocer, who went or why it is going to fill that void?
Great post
Thank you,
Zelo

This is the first I have even heard of them. They look funny. I'm not sure if I will give it a try or not. I tell you though all you would have to do is pour the milk in an easier to use container.

I sorta like the new look of the jug. I haven't seen them yet but I don't think we've bought milk from walmart lately. Personally I'm thrilled that they are thinking of greener ways to package things. And if it's cheeper for them to ship it could be a little cheeper to buy too! The pooring issue may be because people just aren't used to the concept of the design.

Wow, those do look really odd! I didn't realize they were starting to make new jugs. I just bought some milk from Walmart yesterday, but it was in the old kind of jug, so I guess our local Walmart hasn't started stocking them just yet. That's good though that they've come up with something better, and the lower price will be nice also!

I haven't seen this yet, but I'll be going to walmart in a few hours, so I'll see if they have them yet. I didn't see anywhere in the article how they were better for the environment. It talked about water use for cleaning the crates used for the other type, but what else was there. I skimmed it, so did I miss anything? I'm all for more effeciancy and less waste, and I thought it was funny that the biggest complaint was that people were having trouble pouring from the new jugs.
What also popped out at me was how much less labor is needed to bottle these new jugs. So how many people were laid off, I wonder? How many families are in a bind now because this company wants to cut their costs for a bigger prifit. It's nice that it will be a few cents cheaper for the consumer, but there is always someone who has to be on the loosing end.
I am curious about them, though. So if our walmart has them, I'll get a jug and see what the big deal is with pouring.

Those have not made it down here yet. If they start packaging their Soy Milk it it, I would buy them. Looks like a major room saver in the fridge.

People had to adjust to the plastic jugs from the old glass bottles, so I'm sure that once they get used to them they will not notice that they were different. If a person had children that had difficulty pour from the new jugs they could put the milk in smaller pictures. That is what I did when my kids were little any way.

Wow, and milk at Sam's Club is already pretty cheap compared to just about everywhere else. I haven't seen in stores them yet, and I just bought milk from Sam's Club a few days ago. But, I've seen them on TV. I think it's a great idea. I've head about how the spout looks different. Maybe you can get your own spout to clamp on it. I think it's great that they are doing this to help the environment, and if it keeps milk fresher, that's even better.

I haven't seen these but I think it's a step in the right direction. Can't people understand it's actually cheaper this way? You're not paying an arm and a leg for milk now. You'll actually be able to pay a smaller price. People just aren't used to pouring those types of jugs is my opinion. They'll get used to it eventually. If not, shop somewhere else and enjoy paying your high prices.

We don't have these here at our Walmart yet,but after reading the report it says the milk spills everywhere, but i don't have any small children so that will not be a problem..I do not drink that kind of milk but my husband does.I like that soy "silk" milk in very vanilla ,it is very good and it has the same calories as regular milk but the soy milk is really good...

I saw those on tv the other day. I applaud the attempt to go green. I understand that it will be easier to ship because they can ship more per truck than the old style thus saving on transportation costs. At least this is a step toward doing something. On the other hand I have heard that they are hard to pour. Only time will tell. I guess it will take some practice. But, I hate to say this, this is one example of WalMart (Sam's) doing something right.
