Well we had a bird that built a nest right at our front door beside the outside light,my husband took the nest down twice and she built it back the third time so he was like just let her be,she must feel like its a safe place to be.So we watched her build then there was eggs and next three baby birds. We smoke outside on our deck so every time we were sitting out there she would come and sit on the rail and chat at us like she was scolding us for being there. Today when I got home from work the babies were gone but they are only about a week old so do they fly away that fast? Then tonight we were out side sitting and my husband glanced over and there was a black snake laying right above our door like it was going to the nest, scared me to death but my husband caught it and took it to the wood line and let it go. Do you think the snake got the babies or they flew away? Have a great night.

You would have to say it most have been time for the babies to come. That could be the reason that she kept building the nest. Had to have been a very comfortable spot that she like. Determined to let you know that she was not moving. You have to give her that! I don't know how soon birds start flying but if the don't come back that could answer that question. The snake is strange though. Do you always have them come that close to your house? Have a good one though.

Yes she was very determined so that is why we just let her build it there but it was right at our door.I have lived here for 13 years and have never seen a snake in the yard let alone at my front door.I never seen the mama all evening so I am hoping they flew away. Thanks for the response and you have a great night.

This makes me think that the snake has gotten to the baby birds. As you have said, the baby birds are only about a week old and I think birds at that can't fly yet.
But here's a glint of sunshine: if the snake is on its way to the nest, it means the snake is still hungry. Chance is, he is still hungry because he has not eaten the baby birds. So why then the birds are gone? Maybe mother bird had picked them up and take them somewhere after she saw that the snake is watching them.
I really hope so.

richem I really hope so too,I dont know that much about birds to know if she would have moved them,Where would she have moved them to? It is amazing though watching as she built her nest and took care of it and then the daddy bird showed up to help feed them.I was upset to see them gone. You have a wonderful 4th of July.

I sure hope the snake didn't get them, but wouldn't it have been hard for it to have gotten all three.. I don't know what age the mother kicks them out of the nest, but it seems like it would be longer than 1 week.. Maybe she moved them.. I don't like the thought of the snake eating them, that is so sad.. Let us know if you find out what happened to them.. Have a wonderful night..
