What's Out There ?

I N F I N I T Y ... Never ending. When I was at school, we did the obligatory astronomy lessons - you know .. this is 'Orion, The Plough' etc. Being inquisitive, I have asked this question many times to many people, and still received no understandable answer. So, once again, looking up into the sky, I am told that it is never ending. It just goes on and on forever. This means to me that, out there, apart from the planets, THERE IS NOTHING. Now, if you think about it, surely there HAS TO BE SOMETHING, IN ORDER FOR THERE TO BE NOTHING. Could any kind person throw a little light onto this subject for me please? Preferably, without thinking I'm nuts.

Well, space isn't all composed of only planets, you know. It also has stars around which the planets revolve. I hope you know that planets are also being discovered around other stars. The stars clump together to form galaxies and nebulae. Also there are black holes, those inexplicable objects which have such gravitational attraction that they don't even allow light to pass through them. Outside all this, there is the "dark matter", also a hitherto unexplained feature of the universe, which is supposed to fill all the seemingly vacant spaces in the universe. The universe is by no means empty. Cosmic dust and debris is scattered everywhere. It's a fundamental question which has baffled many astronomers as to how much is the extent of the universe. Many theories have been put forward, with none being any more satisfactory than the other. I hope I have been of help. Cheers.

Thanks abhi_destar, Your comment was informative and interesting, so thank you. However, as always, and as you describe, no definitive answer is forthcoming. All I ask is .. Whats on the other side of the perimiter fence ? Any theories on the answer, from anyone, will be most welcome.
