Last last week, we had our torch night in UPmindanao... I don't know if other campuses have the same event.. It's a night where freshmen will showcase their talents to their upperclassmen... When a group of students from BA communication arts (BACA)performed, people were not satisfied with their performance.. Considering that BACA students are expected to be good at that area (exhibiting talents), they received loud boos from audiences.. And it came to the point that the students cried.. Frankly speaking, it was not the worst event i've witnessed in UP.. BUT because of that incident, all UP activities where freshmen will be involved are banned... I know what happened in our campus is awful.. It was a torture night, not a torch night.. I was really sorry for what had happened that night... But do you think it is fair that UP activities, or UP traditions rather, will vanish that easily? Without those activities (freshmen night, dula, hampang, deviance day), I can't consider my university a University of the Philippines.. P.S. Students who participated in oblation run last 2006 got suspended for a week.. my goodness!! ******** should have gone to catholic schools/universities.. UP is UP..

i don't know about your campus but in UP baguio, they rent this big place where concerts are held and let the students perform and goodness the responses are great. freshmen are very taken care of in UP Baguio, giving dinner on big events, snacks on programs by the different clubs or officers of UP Baguio. each talent is showcased, nobody is ignored. if there were boos maybe the performance wasnt really good. why not ask the admin why they cancelled things.

the point is booing is not unusual in every programs/activities, even with other universities... when the performance is awful/not good, we can't control these people who would then shout/boo to the performers.. it has always been a part of imperfect world... we just have to be strong and deal with it... if you experienced that, then stand up! prove to those people that you don't deserve their boos.! canceling all of our activities seems unfair... how about us, innocent people, who did nothing but watched them...?

I really don't know that it is very strict there because in Diliman those things are really natural. I really don't know but maybe a lot of the faculty there are really conservative. I just hope that it wouldn't be the end of your traditional activities there. Mabuhay ang mga Iskolar ng Bayan!

My brother is one of the guys in the first batch of UP Mindanao. He joined all those activities. Anyhow, maybe the administration of UP Mindanao saw that the crowd or the students are becoming out of control that's why they posted this as a punishment. It's not about tradition anymore, but rather the degree of discipline a group needs to have. I'm sure batches of before also showed this type of attitude, but maybe their level of disrespect wasn't that much. It doesn't mean by the way that when you're a UP school it's all about freedom. Great power comes with great responsibility. =)
