Has anyone ever seen a real tornado or a hurricane?

I have lived in places where hurricanes have passed through and I live in "Tornado Alley" now, but I was wondering if anyone else has any tornado or hurricane stories they would like to tell?... Have you ever seen one up close and personal?.... Have you ever had to experience the devastation that its path of destruction caused?

I currently live in "Tornado Alley", here in middle TN. I have only seen one tornado in my life and I pray that I never do. It was around 6, I was in my room doing my homework. My dad knocked on my door and told me, that I needed to get into the living room, that a tornado was spotted near us. I was like ok dad, yea right. We have lived there a long time and never had anything like a tornado popping up or what not. I mean the house was built in the 30's, we moved there in the 70's, so I doubted that a tornado would destroy it. Well, right after I laughed it off, I noticed a large piece of metal go flying around one window to the other window on the other side of my room outside. I didn't get scared yet, I was like cool, it's windy outside. Then my dad didn't knock this time, just came into my room and said get to the living room now.
Well, as I got to the living room, my mom was sitting on the couch with my sister, and I had to sit next to my mom. My two brother's was sitting around my dad on the other side of the couch. My sister was crying, and I was thinking why is she crying. Well, there it was, a small F1 heading away from the house going towards the field that a guy kept cattle in it. We were very lucky, only damage was some roofing, the guy that owned the cattle had to come and fix his fence. It was a mess outside, but at least we still had our home.
My mom has heard a few of them going through the forest on my parents property, my dad doesn't mind, he goes in and clears the fallen trees and makes money off of them.
I have seen a hurricane, while I was in the Navy. When a hurricane gets past a certain point, the ships head out to sea to deal with the hurricane there. Makes sense, than being tied up to a pier to get destroyed. You can hear the winds howling, the waves hitting the sides, plus the rocking. At night is the best, because it helps you sleep. While living in Norfolk, VA, I have delt with 1 hurricane out to sea, and two while at home. My oldest was born in between 2 hurricanes, my poor mom only used to tornados, was so scared, she kept saying wait until it's over to have her, please don't go into labor now, and that's when we still had power,
. When she called after she was born to see how we where doing, I was like ok, just waiting for this hurricane to go pass over. She was like omg, another one. She was really worried because it was just her and me, my husband was out to sea with the Navy. I thought the big tree in the front yard was going to fall on our house. I had to keep water from coming into the house from odd places.
Well, that's my experiences of tornados and hurricanes.

Wow, you know, I also live in "tornado alley"... here in southern MO, about an hour from the mississippi river... you know, I have been through a hurricane once... it was when I lived in Houston, TX.... you know I was little then so I don't remember a whole lot from it, except it was loud and it was dark outside during the middle of the day.... it was horrible though... living here in MO you have to get used to the tornados I guess.... not sure how you are supposed to do that though... It is awful to see the destruction that they cause though... as a matter of fact, a few weeks ago we had two trees in our backyard destroyed... we had to have one cut down completely while the other still has huge branches broken off at the top and just hanging there by the support of the branches below them... and we also had to get part of the neighbors tree removed from top of our carport.... anyway, thank you for your response!! :)

Yeah, seeing it from a safe distance would be my number one choice also! lol... you know, I don't know what it is about tornadoes that attracts people to them... is it because they are so powerful?.... I have always wondered why tornado chasers do what they do... I mean, are they doing it to help develop new technologies to better help people?... or are they just doing it strictly for the thrill of the chase?... I don't know... but I can see how they are intrigued by the storms to start with! Thanks for the comment! :)

When I was about 8 1/2 months pregnant with my daughter (now 19) we had one of those 100 year storms here in Texas. There was haevy rains and one morning we woke up to a foot of water in our house. the water in the street was about 4 feet deep. The tornado sirenes were going off and we could not get to our car. My husband, put a life jacket on my 5 year old son and we headed out down the street in chest high water. There were boats passing us on the street! We made it about 3 blocks to "higher ground". Therre was a gas station that was on a hill and everyone was gathered there, but could go no further. We could see the 2 differant tornados in the sky standing outside. We could not all go inside the store. It was one of those all glass front Exxon's anyway! I was afraid of being too close to all of that glass incase it did hit there. It was pretty scarry. No where to go! I was terrified that I would go into early labor because of all the excitement and have to have the baby right there. It was an experience that I will not forget.

WOW, that was an amazing story! I am glad I asked the question now!.... First of all, I am sorry that happened to you and your family, but hopefully things turned out fine for you all.... I bet that was traumatic for all of you... especially your young son.... goodness... It sounds very frightening.... I have experienced a couple of tornadoes, and hurricanes (nothing like Katrina though, those poor people, that was awful!)but they were nothing like your experience!, I am glad you all are okay... Thank You for the comment! :)
