I loved this song. I am a known lead foot as far as driving goes. I have recieved many speeding tickets in my life. So many in a 5 year span I nearly lost my license due to too many points on my record. Well with the gas crisis here now I have decided to do what I can to help out for me as well as others. I now drive 55 MPH only on the highways. Even in the areas where the limit is 65 or 70MPH. It will cut my gas useage drastically as well. There is talk of going back to the 70's era with a national speed limit imposed on all freeways etc of 55MPH. So I am doing my part to start that here. Do you do anything to save/conserve fuel in your driving habits etc? Are you in favor of a National Speed Limit on the highways of 55MPH?

I have to translate this into Canadian, to figure out what 55 mph means. If it is 100 kph then I am all right with that. That is what most of our highways are at, except in some places like Alberta. I do not drive but my husband does and he gets his gas at Canadian Tire and they have discounts if you use your credit card. There is probably a similar program in the States. I also heard that if you belong to a Co-op you might get a deal and to not use a higher octane gas when a regular one would do. NOt idling your car, and when it is cold in winter to not plug it in so long.

Yeah I know the metric system especially since my car was made in Canada byt GM. It has KPH as well as MPH on the dashboard gauge. We have a lot of highway that is up to 70MPH here in Minnesota and most drive about 80 in those areas. Ugghh!

I still think in mph. It took me a while to figure out how to convert and I am terrible with math. I have to ask my husband and he says divide this by that and add this or multiply this and by the time he finishes I am more confused then ever. I do know that most of our highways, except in Ontario or Alberta where they are speed demons, are 100 kph. There they go up to 110 kph and after going along them, and you slow down, you feel somewhat like the tortoise in the Tortoise and the Hare. Everything is passing so S l o w l y.

I think the best way of conserving fuel is to simply just use the car when it's really necessary and look at other means of transport for when it's not. I can't speak for your area obviously Grandpa Bob, but when I used to spend allot of time in florida it was ridiculously difficult to do ordinary shopping without a vehicle. Even if you could walk to the shops, they were along roads that you couldn't walk on. It seems we need a bit of a rethink about this whold vehicle use thing.

Oh I have cut down a lot of pleasure driving recently. I used to drive to just go see nature and take phots etc. But now I ride the bike near me for that purpose.

That song used to be my theme song! LOL! I used to be one of those that wouldn't drive under 80 mph on the freeway no matter what the posted speed was. It took a couple of speeding tickets to slow me down. And then I sped things back up again for several years. I'm not sure what brought me to my senses lately, but I keep it within 5 mph of the posted speed limit. And I have noticed that because of it my car is getting better mileage. I don't know about the National Speed Limit being 55 mph again. I'm wondering if it would cause more accidents because of the idiots that refuse to follow that speed. Just a thought.

I always drive 55mph even on the interstate. My son-in-law says that if i am ever in a wreck and they say that i was at fault because i was speeding he is going to demand a full investigation because he knows that they are trying to cover something up. LOL. Of course they all tease me unmercifully about my poky driving, of course none of them seem to understand that not only do they use more gas but going 80mph. is not just unsafe but dangerous as well.

I get a hard time from family and friends as I drive
too fast most times. Not any more. I have changed and
hope to remain this way with my driving habits.

I love this song! An oldie but goodie. I only drive 55mph. I am a slow driver. My hubby is a truck driver and he hates the states with speed limits of 55mph. He thinks he is a super trucker and a speed racer. lol

I have a hard time driving 55 too. About the only thing I'm doing to save gas is to stay home more. I really don't want a national 55 mph speed limit cause I'm afraid I would be getting ticketed right and left. When I'm on a 4 lane highway without much traffic and the radio cranked up I tend to go a little fast. I catch myself sometimes going way too fast. I know I need to slow it down but if the speed limit was lower I don't think it would help me. I'd just get a lot of tickets.

Oh yes, I got nitrogen filled tires, and I do try and keep it under 60. I try to use the fan instead of the AC when it is not to hot out.
I emptied some stuff out of the back. I changed the air filter at the last oil change. I aoid jack-rabbit starts and quick stops.
That is all I can think of.

Never heard about the Nitrigen Filled tires. How does that help actually? I keep the windows opened for air colling. Until my wife is in the car. She has allergies and then I use the A/C. I keep my car tuned regulary, change the oil every few months or sooner if needed, keep the car maintained as well regularly. Thanks.

In our country the recommended economy driving speed in freeways is 80kph(50Mph). These days due to gas price I can't push it any further. We hardly use the car anymore its much better to commute. To see how seldom we use it, I gas up full tank last 2 weeks ago, the price adjusted 3 times already from that day and my tank is only half empty.

I do not drive anymore so I can not say. If I drove I would say I am all for it. It would be hard to slow down again but it is needed.

I am in favor of anything that has to do with conservation...including slowing down. I don't drive the interstate alot so I am used to the lower speed limit. It's really not that bad once you get used to it! Just think if everyone did it..

I am also in favor of the National Speed Limit. I can recall when I first got my license way back in the 60's the speed limit was 75 MPH on the Interstates in Michigan. But gas was like 50 cents or so a gallon also.

haha, grandpa I'm the opposite. I'm one of those slow coaches that you would hate to meet on the roads.
I love love love driving slowly. call me squaretile the snail.
somehow I just feel safer and more in control when my vehicle and trundling along at my very own pace. Especially at turns. I hate going fast at turns. Of course on the expressways and freeways I drive a little faster, say 70 or 80 km/h. but that is still slower than the 100 km/h that most people do down the fast lane.

Hi dear
wow, i never thought that u can be rash driver as u seems to be careful person, but u never know and driving fast is thrill too
I really appreciate your thought about speed limit, here we have spped limit of 100Km/hr and on Motoway it is 120Km/Hr. i do believe that driving 55 MPH that is almost 88Km/Hr is perfect as by this u can save the fuel and add ur effort in this situation, as at this speed fuel consumption is economical. The more u speed the higher the fuel consumption
Take care

It's hard to slow down, isn't it? And yet, what's our hurry?!
I coast when I can, down hills and around curves. I stop accelerating just short of the top of a hill and I've noticed a big difference in my miles per gallon. When I see a light turn red up ahead, the foot gets off the gas! I'll have to stop anyway, why speed up to it? It usually turns green before I get there so I don't have to waste more gas accelerating. Yes, I'm in favor of a 55mph limit but I wish people would curtail themselves and not be impatient with those who are going 55mph. Then we wouldn't need the law.
I always laugh at a gas-guzzler that passes me, exceeding the limit. I'm saving gas, they're wasting it big time. A little patience can save us a lot of money!

I am not sure that changing the speed limit will convince people to drive slower. We do try to drive no faster than 60, because our cars achieve much better fuel mileage. Regular oil changes, make sure the tires are properly inflated. Our cars are older cars, 1991, both of them, I think. Purchased very used. One gets on average 32 mpg, and the other 35 or more mpg. I see people pass me left and right, then I pass them up when they are sitting at the gas pump refueling.

Tell me how much gas do you really save by driving 55? I’m curious? Is it proven also. I have heard is you drive close to semi trucks you save gas. I’m not a driver of 55- I try to slow down- but just can’t. I drive around 72 on the highway. If they lower the speed limit- I’m sure I’ll get speeding tickets at first- and what I save in gas will be spent on fines.

Hey Grandpa Bob! I can't drive 55 either-- I mean I can't drive as FAST as 55, LOL. I hate driving fast! You'd think I was an 88 year old granny the way I drive. I'm usually a few MPH under the 55 on the highways. Drives my hubby crazy. He tends to go a tad over the speed limit.
In answer to your question, YES I am in favor of a 55 MPH on highways.

Way to go AGB and I think that is a great idea! If I were still able to drive I would most definitely follow suit and do the same thing! Trying to persuade my other half to do that would be next to impossible I fear - perhaps they should change the speed limit! xxx

You know something funny when gas prices were cheaper, no one cared about driving the speed limit. Cause I guess they didn't give thought to the gas prices going up. Now that the prices have gone up and are not going down; 55 mph is being done now. It had to take the gas prices to go up before people really start to drive 55 mph. I have to admit that I'm a heavy foot when it comes to driving. But now my views on driving right now are really different. The whole world really depends on gas and everyone if feeling the crunch. Now for a while everyone will be driving 55 mph. No matter where they are and even if the speed limit is over 55. Have a good one.

Yeah, I myself can't drive 55 either...I've gotten stopped a few times in my life for speeding also, but I've always been fortunate enough to only get warnings everytime...knock on wood...lol. I haven't really done a whole lot to save gas when I drive, I know my husband says to keep your tires aired up properly, he's a mechanic, he knows, he's always telling me to coast whenever I'm slowing down to turn off, it not only helps save a little gas, it also prevents wear and tear on your brakes. I'm in favor of a National Speed Limit, but it will be hard for me to drive that speed limit, because I have a lead foot..lol. I know I would end up driving faster.
