Calico cats are normally girls. It has something to do with the black/gray and orange coloring being only found together on females. * There are genetic accidents or defects that can pop out a male calico cat, but he is usually sterile and has other problems.

Is it the coloring or the markings that make it a calico? Becuse we have one adult male that is black/gray, orange and white but not spotty, it's all mixed together...I'll look for a picture of him...and a small matching kitten. And another male kitten looks like he is gray and white with a few small orange spots.

Mysticat - My husbad's Calico kitty Mystiat (Mysti for short)
That's fiction. ALL Calico cats are female. There is not one male calicl cat. My husband has a calico, and he told me this fact. I'll attach a picture of her.

I had heard this about male calicos being rare. We have two calicos, Foxy and her daughter Princess. None of Foxy's other kittens have been close to calico. Her first batch of 5 was with a long haired white male. It produced 4 males and one female, the female was gray and white, the others were gray and white, orange and white, all 3 colors mixed, and a peach. All were long haired except the orange and white one. Her second batch of 4 was with a short haied gray male. Those kittens included one male identical to the father, two female mixed tigers, and Princess. We do have another male kitten (grandchild of Foxy) that might have the markings of a calico but instead of black he's gray....I don't know it that counts for anything.
