Hi ,
I want to buy an expensive TV because :
1)It shows Good Picture with better Clarity .
2)The Audio Output is very Good .
3)A Bigger TV with a Bigger Screen is very attractive .
4)Cinematic effect is much more pronounced on a LCD TV than
on a Flat (or Non-Flat) TV Screen .

As for your question, I would say that people buy TV is not because of their prices but in fact, it must be because of the functions of the TV... Nobody would want to buy a expensive TV which look exactly like a cheap TV...
Some people may like to collect all sort of TV and they are always willing to spend any amount of money just to get his hands on the TV...
Some people may just want to show off to his friends or relatives that he could afford an expensive TV... Something to show his status...
Even though a normal TV and a expensive TV shows the same programme, some people may prefer better colour and also bigger screen....

Yeah high definition is a little better..,And if you got the money to go out and buy a 60" plasma screen and the mount for the wall then why not..,I'm certinly not spending ten thousand dollars on something like that I have much better things to invest 10g's in.
