Well, I'm not sure if I should be letting this bug me or not, but I can't seem to get if off my mind. Every year for the past 4 years my husband and I have had an end of summer bash on Labor Day Sunday. It started with just family and has grown to include friends also. Everyone knows about it and pretty much keeps their calendars open for it. It's actually turned into an all-weekend event becuase we have about 4 people or so that come in from out of town and stay at our house. It's a lot of fun seeing all my family together and some of my friends that I don't see too often.
Well, we sent out the evites for the party earlier in the week and are getting some of our responses back. One of them really shocked me. My step-mother replied that she wont make it this year, which wasn't a surprise because she usually has to work and it's about a 1-2 hour drive for her to get here. But her reason is because she's having a knee replacement a couple weeks prior and won't be able to get around. I was really disappointed to learn about this like this - as a post on the evite website. I mean, even though my father has passed away a few years ago, we're still pretty close and talk quite a bit. I would have thought she would e-mail me at least... I will call her tonight to talk with her about it and I hope she doesn't hear the disappointment in my voice in finding out this way.

reiny maybe she was afraid to tell you so you would not cancel your party. She may not have wanted you to worry. Who knows why people do not communicate with us like they should.
I have not been close with my parents, dad's wife is in the hospital with a heart attack and anxiety disorder, my mom is in a nursing home and she is a game player and a pain in my neck.
I am sorry you are upset and that she did not tell you sooner.

I didn't get a chance to call her today either, but I will tomorrow or probably Wednesday. She may have thought she already told us.

She may have forgot she did not tell you. I have a friend right now that is having some big problems with her memory. She is on vitamin B12 shots and keeps forgetting to take them. Then that will make her memory worse. It is a viscous cycle.

She may have to go to rehab for a few weeks until she can get around on the new knee. Many people use crutches or a walker to ambulate safely before they are allowed to put pressure on the leg. Perhaps someone could drive out to get her and have a rented wheelchair for her to get around in.

She said she's going to be out of commission for a few weeks. Our house is not very disability-friendly. We have stairs all over the place. We'll go over and hang out with her afterwards one day I'm sure.

I'm wondering if maybe she thought she already told me... I think I knew it was something that was going to happen, but I guess I didn't realize it was going to be soon.
