My neighbour's son who is 2 and a half year old suffers a lot with high constipation. He does not pass his bowels daily. He passes his stools may be once in 3 days. And he suffers a lot at that time. His face becomes red and cries a lot. Though the paediatrician says it would be alright in few years, it is very difficult to see his mother also crying at that time of his bowel movements. Can you please give me sugestions that could help him to make hisbowel movements smoother and easier. I would be very thankful on his mother's behalf.

What has the doctor said? For my brother they actually had to give him fiber drinks (not sure what kind, her doctor would know what's safe) because he refused to eat the foods to help him & had a lot of troubles. For natural remedies, cut out foods like cheese, bananas, etc. and make him eat things like whole grain breads, oatmeal, prunes, pears etc. etc.

The boy's pediatrician has recommended a syrup. But he vomits everything after taking the medicine. So she also goes for home remedies only. Your suggestions would be quite useful to her.

It sounds to me like the boy needs for fruit in his diet. My son is 8 and for awhile he was having the same sort of issue. He was not getting enough fiber in his diet. He has been eating more fruits lately and his problem has pretty much gone away.

As you have said, fruits play an important role in adding the fibre content in the diet. I will suggest this also to my neighbour.

First of all look at his diet. get rid of all store bought junk foods. that includes those sugary cereals. Start feeding him oatmeal it is full of fiber. Nest get him to drink plenty of water. My daughter had this problem and it was caused by milk. And dark Karo Syrup is a good laxative for small children and infants. Just put about 2 tablespoons in some of his water. You may need to adjust it after a time. I hope this helps. Years ago we gave our babies formulas of canned milk diluted with equal amounts of water and Karo syrup.
