How many books do you have in your home library?

There was a power cut today, and I grabbed this opportunity to have a look at my home library. We had plenty of books ones, but we gave away those we had lost interest in. Still, I feel there are around five hundred books. I can't tell you the exact number because I haven't counted. I was actually looking for a book on the "Dead Sea Scrolls," my current hot interest being Christianity. I have heaps of exciting titles such as "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "Gone with the Wind," and so on in my library. So, have you arranged the books in your library recently? How many books do you have? Cheers and happy mylotting

Let me ask you some clarification.. Are you asking about the books that i have borrowed , and that which never returned.. or those something which i brought on my own, but never lent, to any one..

Oh geeze return those books to those whom you borrowed them from. I can recall my son years ago had books from the library that were a few years overdue. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL, sai, you are really a very interesting character! How many years are those books overdue? You had better avoid the librarian. As far as I know, librarians are ferocious individuals who love books although they don't read a word of any book themselves. Cheers and thanks for the response!

Our home library has suffered with several long distance moves in which we had to decide what books were most important. However, we recently went to a used bookstore sale. They have good prices anyway with most things being $3 or less, however for the month of July they are selling things at 75% off the normal prices. We bought $134 worth of books (seven large boxes and several plastic bags). All in all there were probably about 300 books from there and then we probably owned 150-200 not counting our son's books (which are in his room on his book shelf). We love books (in fact we are going back to the used book sale this weekend as well)!

Hi aiden, it must be great to be part of a book loving family. We are a book loving family too, always taking advantage of the sales. :) Cheers and thanks for the response.

I can't tell you an exact number, either, as it's quite a few. And, I've had to give or sell a ton of them off because I just don't use them. It seems like once I buy a book, I don't read them because I feel like I can read them anytime I want as there's no due date or anything. So, I never read them. I now buy mostly reference books and cookbooks because I actually use those. I rarely buy fiction because they sit on the shelf forever. If I want to read fiction, I get a book out of the library because I know I will either read them or take them back by the due date.

I love cookbooks too, though I hardly follow the recipes. I usually modify them to suit my taste. I have a nice mixture of fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, dictionaries, history books, and so on in my library. Cheers and thanks for the response.

I get a lot of gift cards to bookstores, which is kinda funny because I work in a library and I don't buy CDs. But, not all of them are cookbooks, some of them are bible things, health books, and books with hiking and biking trails.

I have quite a few cookbooks but I rarely make a recipie out of them. it seems like most of the time I am just looking at them thinking I'd like to make that or that sounds good.

I have no idea but I would guess in the hundreds stashed in various areas throughout the house. My wife reads a lot and I seldom read actually. She buys a lot of books at garage and rummage sales for her reading pleasure. We don't arrange the books as most are just stuck on a shelf or in a box after either or both of us are done with them. We give some away after we are finished with them as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I simply love books, and if you are in the habit of giving them away, I guess I would rush to be the first in line!! :) Cheers and thanks for the response

Positive I think we are in the 150, 200 range. We had to lean our library down over 2 years ago when we bought our new home. I hated to see some of those books go but at least they went for a good cause and that was a book sale to fund our new home town library.

It sure is sad to see books go, especially the ones you love. Still, you have a sizable library, and I am sure you will get more soon. Cheers and thanks for the response.

Since my house is a small one I don't have a home library. I do however have a public library available to me that is so close that I can step out my front door stand on the porch and see it very well from my house. So all though I don't have a home library and I love to read I have the public library well within reach.

We literally have thousands of books and really no place to organize or even display them. So unfortunately I have box after box full stored in a upstairs closet. Then I have a whole other library on my computer! Probably at least 200-300 ebooks and about 40 audio books. My husband also has several hundred books on his computer, a few are repeats of what I have but most are not. We have books from Ancient Greek art to gardening to physics to sci-fi novels to Zoroastrianism and just about everything in between. Can you tell we do a lot of reading around here? We both read almost every single day with very few days off.

I may have about that number also. I have sold some of mine over the years but it seems like i am always accumulating new ones to take their place. I am expecting another one from Amazon just this week. I to arrange mine just in an order that makes sense like tallest to smallest or something like that. I think arranging by subject matter might be a better idea but I dont know what that would look like on the shelf.

I have not yet discovered the perfect arrangement for books. We tried numbering them once, but someone would turn up and mix up all the numbers! Yes, arranging them by subject is a great idea, but I ran into a problem there too. I simply couldn't figure out which subject some books belonged to. :) Cheers and thanks for the response

We have well into the thousands. We recently built in bookshelves that cover 3/4 of the wallspace in one of our rooms, and we've still got books in boxes. I need to go through and see if there are any we aren't interested in anymore, but that'll be a huge task! We have a lot of textbooks which are good for years and years, some longer than that, before they need replacing. I love books!

I have around a hundred books on various subjects ranging from History to Science, Sociology, and of course, fiction. I don't read most of them except fiction, and Sociology sometimes (my favourite that I always read when I do is Masters of Sociological Thought. I have Salman Rushdie's Midnight Children, Shalimar the Clown, The Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, scores of short story collections, Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpretation of Maladies, and a few thrillers (I dispense with most of them).

I had a beautiful library in my house. I had an old fashion brick Victorian hose with a wrap around porch and a balcony on top and a wonderful library with book shelves from ceiling to floor. My ex got all the books in the divorce. I miss them even after all these years. I spent hours in there reading the greats!

Your ex got all the books? :( Wow, that must have been a devastating experience. If such a thing happened to me, I would have cried buckets. I love books! cheers and thanks for the response!

Hello positiveminded, Well I am sitting now in my study and I am surrounded by eight bookcases. They contain roughly 1,500 books. :-) However, I have to admit that I have not read them all, as I bought over 1,000 books last Christmas from a House-Sale and I intend to sell them through Amazon. I have a few by my bed, which I am reading, but I could theoretically bury myself in the library here for a few years :-) Oh! happy me! lol All the best. Umart

I am currently in the midst of arranging my "library". In April of this year, I moved into a house from a one-bedroom apartment. During my packing up, I estimated that I had approximately 5,500 books. The bulk of my move was boxes of books. As I was getting the yard and the house livable ... at least, livable for me ... it's only been since last week that I have started opening those boxes and putting some of the books on shelves. Now I have the time and the inclination to just pull out all my "friends", remembering the good read, finding just the right spot for each one, and maybe re-reading one, or two, or ... it really slows down the unpacking when I'm stopping to re-read an old friend.

I just have a pile of books on a shelf. I once wanted to start a library at home but could never get down to it because I buy books to read and I don't have enough time to do all that I want in reading. Its nice to collect books but then sometimes you need to trade or exchange in order to keep your reading going anyway.

Oh my goodness i have over 500 books!! I am a complete book worm. I probably would have much more if i were not a library asistant and i dont necessarily have to buy all of my books. I am a very avid reader and i go through a book a week or two weeks depending on the size of the particular novel that i am reading. Hopefully when i am a little older and have a house of my own, i will have my very own library that i can sit and relax in.

Hey, this is one time that I am able to reply as to the number of books I have - exactly 383 books. I've been going to book sales very often nowadays, and half the time, I wasn't sure if I've bought or read the book before. I couldn't remember what books I've - so I did a list, which I would bring along with me. I've got old favourites like Sherlock Holmes, Alfred Hitchcock's collection of horror stories, some Agatha Christie - I'm looking forward to collecting more . Have a good day and happy posting!
