The trouble with lengthy discussions is that it does put a lot of people off, especially the ones who just want to jump in respond and cash in and don't want to be spending their time reading and reading and reading. Long discussions also tend to get different responses, what I mean is, people skim read or do not read the discussion in full because of its length, that way it causes a lot of friction because it is clear from the response that the discussion hasn't been read properly. I must admit I do prefer to respond to short discussions but we all different, some people prefer to start long discussions others short. It can been seen as waffling when a few lines would suffice.

I actually enjoy and find myself more interested in loger discussions. I will answer shorter, more basic discussions, but I like deep ones that really talk about thoughts, ideas, experiences and feelings. And I really think there are enough people here who do like that. I have posted both short and long discussions, and none of them were made just for length! The thing is, I know once I start talking about something I am interested in I tend to write until I've said it all. That being said, I also try to bold the part or parts that I want to get input from others one, like questions or experiences with a similar situation. All posts have validity, as long as they don't break rules and as long as they come from the persons own experience and writing! Basically, if I'm not in the mood to read a long discussion, I usually take a break and come back later or I read a shorter one. But I would never want someone to hold back on how much they write. I know that a lot of times I am amazed at how much I write because I never realize how much it is till I'm done!

I give lengthy responses when I have to say all I have to say and it takes long to do it.
I'm not into lengthy discussions.
Mostly I read them through and then make a response based on what I'd like to say and no more.
I think some people either get carried away or just say it in too many words.
We can all minimise our words if we think a little more about it.

Bala
there are a few points which I like to say regarding this.
1. my good friend starts a lengthy discussion, which is serious (may be both general and personal)
2. any other user starts a lengthy objective discussion, like discussions with a cause
3. any user starts a discussion on private issues
I would respond to the first one for sure, most definitely, most earnestly.

I would avoid the third one for sure.
The third one I would avoid for not only I do not know the person but also it gets boring to read through a long rant or long family feud or even a normal boring drawls. So, I would most likely not respond to it.
Now, coming to the second one, time would have the last say. If I have time and in that frame of mind I would reply to it. Some discussions are lengthy but really meaningful and close to my heart. I would love to participate in such posts.
Now before this gets bornig and you kill me. I mus stop. Kaput.

Frankly speaking, Bala, I do not like very lengthy discussions, which are started for the sake of being lengthy. I prefer short and crisp discussions, as you start, which are easy to comprehend and easy to reply. Reading a lengthy discussions (sometimes the writer indulges in telling lengthy side stories, which may be little consequence)makes me feel jittery. I get limited time at my disposal to respond to discussions and I prefer to responding as many discussions as possible. The time taken to read a lengthy discussions and for responding to it could be utilised for responding to 2-3 short discussions.
What about you?
How are you? We were missing you (I hope you were absent from here.......LOL!)

Hi balasri! I'm not sure what you mean about started for the sake of being lengthy - I'm rather lengthy myself - can't help it! And some of my favourite discussions like pyewackets and theprogamer's tend to be long too. And that's sometimes how discussions - in real life are...some people tend to state their point in a short and sweet way and some more detailed!

Hi bala.
There are times that I like lengthy discussions that makes sense.I think, sometimes there are posters who can't avoid making their discussions extra lengthy. Because they really have a lot of words to describe what they are trying to point out.As long as, they are on track on what's the point of that discussion, no matter how many words they use, that's alright with me.
BUT! I do avoid those lengthy discussions, that seems to go on and on. Meaning, the poster may have forgotten to use any periods. It's one big, long paragraph. And that kind of discussion is tiring to the eyes.

Lengthy DIscussions are all right. If the subject is something I can speak too then I'll respond no matter what the length. Sometimes I like lenthy ones better because I can respond to other's responses. Then It becomes sorta a back and forth discussion. I really like when that happens.
Also, If the discussion is longer then you know the person who started it is getting more money compensation from mylot. Most of the time I only respond to friend's discussions so I feel good when they are making more money. I also belive that the more I respond to other peoples discussions the more they will respond to mine.
I think its very difficult to actually start a discussion that is guarenteed to be lengthy. But isn't that the goal of all of us?

balasri I dontmind lengthy discussions but I hate the oneliners
that seldome give you any idea of what the discussor wants
from you. I have not seen many really lenghty ones here but as lot of really short ones. no they are not started just to be lenghty but to get paid by being quality posts. you people cannot get it through your heads that mylot wants quality discussions of at least five or six lines that is not too long and that is what they will pay for. I like a discussion that interests me and makes me want to respond.

I have a hard time reading really really really lengthy discussions. I try not to be too lengthy on here. I find that this really isn' the place for exatremely lengthy discussions. Those discussions belong on places like Gather.
