Is Fish Oil really that beneficial?

I have seen a lot of commercials on television for fish oil and I am not completely sure on what it does other than the fact it is supposed to help keep your heart healthy,but I do not understand how people can take it because just its name makes it sound nasty,and I hope it helps you my friend,and I also have heart problems that run in my family,along with high blood pressure and high chloresteral.
