kids mean to animals

I was in VA for a week a couple of weeks ago, and I saw this 13 year old boy feeding the seagulls. I didn't think nothing of it until I looked closer and saw he was wrapping something up in the food. When he went in for a swim, I went over and picked up a piece of the cake he was feeding them, Inside the cake was a piece of an alka seltzer. when he got out of the water, I asked him why he did that, He said because he can and he doesn't only do it to the seagulls. I was furious and told him he should't hurt animals. He just laughed at me and ran up to catch up with the bus that was leaving. I think it was a camp bus. I thought if someone hurt something small when they are young, that they might grow up to hurt bigger things and/or people. Is this true? I told the lifeguard, but she shrugged it off and said it wasn't her problem, that to leave him alone. Should I have done something else or told someone else? I am still shocked and saddened about how someone can hurt a defensive animal.

Hi pudgles. That is so disgusting, it just kind of makes you sick! I live on the east coast and the kids and even some of the adults have been caught doing that very same thing here. I know it makes you feel like you want to do something but unfortunately, there is not a whole lot you could have done, apparently no one else around there was too concerned about it. Even if you would have called the police, the kid would have been gone by the time they got there. Kudo's to you for reprimanding him! The very sad truth to it all is that they had to learn it somewhere. My kids were brought up to love and respect all animals and not just the ones we have as pets but I guess some parents/guardians leave that part out.

Unfortunately, I found out after the fact that this kid has abusive parents who fight alot and abuse each other (don't know if he is as well, but he does hear & see all)so I don't know if this is his cry out or what. I don't know who he was or where he lived, for like I said, i was only visiting VA for the week. If i did, then I probable would have my daughter make friends with him to show him that no all people are bad..etc.

You have a right to be concerned. Not only should you be concerned for the animals sake but also for humans sake. It is common for those that are violent or harmful as adults to start off with small animals even those as small as frogs or lizards. It is alarming when you see them doing these things. More so because he was alone, if accompanied by other teens maybe not so much. Maybe you should have reported these behaviors to authorities. I know its not that uncommon but it is definitely uncalled for in this situation.

I did report to the authorities that roam the beach, but they didn't seem to mind for they didn't see it so they couldn't do anything about it. I think twice now before I bring any animal around him,,,and if someone else does, I do watch him closely..

pudgles hi While i feel that kid was doing something really evil, I am glad that the moron didnt know that a little alka seltezer would not hurt a seagull, if he had he would probably have just put something really harmful in the c ake. Kids like that should be caught and punished for what they are doing, and made to learn about animals and how to care for them, and be good to them. I am wondering where he picked up this, did he by chance have parents or a parent who is also cruel to animals? I think that I would notify the coast guard and also the local police as maybe they could catch this kid doing the same stunts again.

I found out later that this kid is from an abusive family where the parents just abuse each other, not him, so, maybe its his way of crying out. not sure. don't know what happened after for i was only in VA for a week, I pray no other animals got hurt and I pray he gets the help he so needs. He took off before I could get any info from him, but i did find out the abusive part from an elder woman who was there for she said she was his neighbor, but that is all i got. i wish i got more but my ride was leaving and i didn't want to be stranded in VA.
