Liverpool’s hopes of selling Xabi Alonso to Juventus appear to be over after the Italian team ended their interest in the Spain midfielder.
Liverpool had looked set for much of the close season to be selling the 26-year-old Alonso to Juve, with the reported £10mil (US$19.7mil) transfer fee likely to help fund a move for Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry.
After much discussion and protest, Villa have said this weekend that they will consider an offer for the England international, but Liverpool could be struggling to find the cash after Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri said he was no longer considering a move for Alonso.
“No,” Ranieri said after watching his team lose 3-0 to Hamburg on Sunday in a preseason friendly in London. “Not at all.”
