My son signed up to be a manager with his high school football team. He went to his first practice today. He said he liked it. They had him running the whole length of the field getting this and that, and he got to run the camera to film the practice. He gets water and towels, does the camera, and gets extra balls, stuff like that. We were uncertain as to whether it would be a good thing but so far it seems alright. Our son isn't very athletic at all. He's very smart and more into computers and books. He does get along well with everyone though so we hope this will work out. We were glad that he wanted to do something extra. We just don't want it to turn out bad for him with kids making fun of him or anything. Sometimes kids can be cruel. Guess we'll just have to hope for the best. He really enjoys doing the camera so maybe he'll get to do alot of that. He did say all the team members were nice today. My husband and I are probably worrying for nothing!

It sounds to me like it will be a very good thing for your son. I'd stop worrying if I were you. From the way you described it, he's getting plenty of exercise! That's always good. It may just make him a bit more athletic! And who knows? He just may turn into a professional cameraman at sporting events! We never want anything bad to happen to our children and try to protect them from experiencing painful situations, whether physical or emotional. We just have to let go when they show signs of spreading their wings and be there IF they fall. If he's a smart kid, he will learn how to deal with kids who make hurtful remarks. It happens all the time and we cannot protect our kids from it 100% of the time, so the best thing to do is to teach them how to handle it when it does happen. It sounds to me like he's going down the right path. You and your husband are there for him, just in case. I can only see 'good' coming from this experience.

That's why we decided to let him do it. He needs to experience new things and see what else is out there that he may like. He isn't worried at all, that's just me..lol. I'm a worry wort in case you haven't noticed.

That's great that your son wanted to get out there and participate even if he isn't very athletic! My father was a coach for the Boys and Girls Club when I was a kid and he made me sign up for all kinds of sports that I usually hated but one thing I did enjoy was being part of a team. Even though your son isn't a player, he does have a job to do and he is a member of the team so I'm sure the players will be nice to him...especially if they want to get any camera time.

He likes it so far. He loves doing the camera and was telling me they are going to be getting a laptop that works with the computer. The coach ask my son if he'd help set it up and all..lol. He has had to help his computer teachers with stuff ever since the fifth grade!

That's very cool that he wanted to "stretch" himself and get out of his comfort zone to try something different. Good for him. He may find a niche in there somewhere. And a few friends or two. Plus, it can be "character-building" to get out of your element a little bit. That's great. He's to be complimented on that.

Yep. I'm proud of him. I'm glad he wanted to do something he's never done before and that he will have to learn all about. He's a pretty outgoing kid, just a brainiac..lol.
