Well seems I have small critters eating away at a few stalks and ears of my sweet corn in my yard. the attatched photo shows how it was chewed off at the ear. the stalk right at ground level was also chewed up a bit. I don't think it is squirells as Buster has chased them all year and killed a few and they are seldom seen out back anymore. It isn't rabbits as there are teeth marks that can't be from rabbits. I have seen chimpmunks all over as of late in my yard both front and back. The stalks are being chewd at a very low level as well is why I feel it's the chipmunks as well. Not the higher up ears damaged, just the ones a foot or less from the ground. Do chipmunks eat corn and corn stalks as well? Is there a detterant to keep chipmunks away as well? I hate them eating it before I get to eat it. Grrrr!
Simon?
Theodore?
Alvin?
Alvin???
Allllllvinnnnn???
Stop eating my sweet corn already dang you little critters.

I have not noticed anything eating out corn yet. We get raccoons and opossums around here too. Not so many chipmunks I don't think. I don't really know any ways to deter them from eating your crops. You might have to sacrifice a few ears.

We get it all.
But Buster my Beagle does a decent job chasing them off.
But he digs too much so I don't keep him outside too long at a time.
I think so as well about sacrificing a few ears etc.

Chipmunks, squirrels, and mice. They all can get up there. Once they open it up, birds will get to it, too. A deterrent? I haven't found one yet. But please do share, if you come up with one. I want to enjoy my corn. I'm not planting it for those critters!

I've seen sprays for that but I prefer not to
use chemicals of any kind on my gardens.

Hiya Grandpa Bob,
I have an Uncle Bob, :-)
I have corn also, but it is safe for the moment, my problem are my tomatoes.
The possums here like them, and raid them at night. I know when they are here, there is a BANG on the shed roof, as they jump from the fence, the fence between the houses here in suburbia, Melbourne Australia is a possum highway at night.
I ran around a few days ago when I heard bang, and shone a bright light in Mr possums eyes and stunned it a bit, I then pulled its tail and smacked its bum and yelled at it 'Don't steal my tomatoes'.
1 week later Mr possums comes back to test the water.
I was right onto him, in the eyes with the light and he ran down the fence line, I shot around the corner with my water bottle and squirted him up the bum. He didn't like that either.
But I was thinking off protecting the produce from the critters by putting a single roll of welded square mesh fence around it, much stronger than chicken wire, it stands by itself it is so strong.
Might work, but I thought, these possums will just climb inside and eat them anyway, so, I remain on vigil, with my water bottle.
I know they hate that.

You have made me laugh once again today my dear Grandpa!!!!
Now I have that theme song running through my head and I am being taken back to my childhood!
But seriously...I do not have an answer to your question but I do love fresh corn and so I hope that you do get to eat some!

Thats funny...Alllvinnn!!! I haven't ever heard of chimpunks doing that, but I guess they can, they're rodents aren't they? I know we had alot of problems with mice in our garden one year, they kept eating the leaves off of everything, the only thing we could do was use traps. I'm sure you could probably go to your local feed store and find something that will work to keep them away, something you have to spread around. Hope you find a solution...Have a good day

Yes they are rodents.
And I've seen a lot as of late also.
Maybe they just love mt gardening skills?
I don't want to kill them excpet as a last resort.

Too funny, you have Alvin and the Chipmunks eating the corn from your garden. I wish that they would leave your garden alone, You have been workign very very hard at this. Does your grandson ever help with the gardening ? I just wonder if the little guy is just like his grandpa!1 person likes this

The only thing you can do is get your cat or dog out there so they can chase them out. I think that the scent of a cat or dog might help deter them because I see a lot less rabbits ever since we got a dog. I don't really know. The squirrels still come around, though. You can cover the plants in mesh or do anything to contain them, but when a chipmunk wants something, the chipmunk will get in there somehow.
