My boyfriend and I have been dating for a year. In that short amount of time, I've managed to pack on 35lbs! It's really no surprise that this has happened...we eat out frequently, we order pizza and wings, we have popcorn, candy, and every other imanginable junk food. I know what the problem is, and that it exists, but I'm having a hard time taming the food-beast! I always promise make promises to myself...like "On Monday I'll start my diet again!" or, "I can't start dieting today, I have a BBQ to go to." So, I'd really appreciate some advice in this area. We've been discussing getting married by October of 2009 and I don't want to be a blob for my wedding. I hope by using this site I'll be encouraged by others who have faced or are facing this same battle with food that I am. Thanks for reading! :)

Okay so anyone that knows me knows that I have a ginormous sweet tooth. I can not stay away from sweets for anything. I don't know it's just that sometimes they seem to be crying out to me "eat me Laysha, eat me." So I end up eating it. During my first year of college I did gain the freshman 15 and I was so mad at myself for letting that happen. Right now I am on my way to losing most of that weight and more than actually. I'm not calling what I'm on a diet but more like a lifestyle change. I've changed the way I eat but I still get to eat some sweets now an again. 35lbs is a lot and I know how hard it is to tame that food-beast. You don't have to stop eating the things that you like to eat, all you have to do is eat less of it. My mother made this candy right now out of plantain and some milk. And I left some and am about to take it back to the kitchen. What I ate was enough for me. You have to have strong will for this type of thing. And there are times when I'm not strong enough but I make sure to try harder next time. Just remember "small portions". Good luck on your goal and I hope that you are able to reach it for your wedding.

Yes, so true, I know I can't expect to put myself through some rigerous strict diet, because I'll fail. I just need to be motivated to eat less of the junk and more nutritious choices. Tonight when I went to the grocery store, I bought whole grain pasta and some fruits and other healthy snacks. I'm excited because October is only a little more than a year away!

tiner - What a bummer. You fell in love and put on weight. I did that by eating too much candy and sitting around all the time. There really is only one diet that works. You have to take in less calories than you put out. That means exercising and eating the right foods. I know, yuck. Once you develop a taste for junk food, it's hard to shake the desires. My ex lost two hundred pounds with the Weight Watcher program. It's the only method I would recommend. You don't have a special diet, there are weekly support meetings, but you still have to exercise. Tape a picture of a wedding gown you love onto your refrigerator. Think how beautiful you will look in your gown and don't obsess on the negatives. (You won't guilt yourself into dieting. Negative prompting is self-defeating.) Good luck. You will have those wedding pictures for the rest of your life. Be who you want to be.

anawar - thanks for that your advice. I also have a friend who did weight watchers for awhile and lost 16lbs doing it - but wow 200lbs! That's something to be proud of lol! I really do like your idea of finding a wedding gown that I really really would like to wear and put it on my fridge. I think that would be help provide motivation - you're right about having a positive attitude, because when I don't have one, I'm negative and I'll think...well I already messed this day up, I might as well just eat whatever I want for the rest of the day. Thanks for your inspiration!

I think I am facing the same problem. One thing you could do though is try to make some lower calorie substitutions. There is a book called eat this not that which tells you some foods you can eat that are similar to the high calorie foods you like. Right now I am eating chocolate chip cookies from deciptively delicious. Instead of having like tons of sugar there is like one cup of brown sugar and chick peas believe or not. It's kind of a painless way to cut down your calories.

Oh I think I've heard of that - is it kind of a cook-book for parents to use to trick their children into eating more veggies? Maybe I'm thinking of something else...but either way, it's a good plan. It's crazy how sometimes foods you think are good for you really have more calories than something else that you'd think is worse for you.

Well, I believe you have named the source of your problem. The things you named are fatty. I'm not one to speak because I also indulge in junk too, sometimes too much. If you want to know the truth, you have to exercise. That's all the advice one could give to you. If you cut back on the junk and exercise more you will definitely see results within a few months. And you don't have a lot to lose so you will lose the 35 pounds in no time.
