Winter Olympics vs. Summer Olympics

I'm pretty sure I've seen a discussion about this not too long ago, but I'm not certain what all it was about. So pardon me if I'm repeating someone else's discussion. First, I'd like to know which kind you like better? Or does it just depend where they are located? What are your favorite summer sports to watch in the Olympics, and what are your favorite winter sports to watch in the Olympics? And those of you who do not like watching any Olympics, would you tell me why? Now I know the next summer games in 2012 are in London, England. But where are the winter games in 2010 going to be?

I would much rather watch the summer Olympics. You get to see the athletes much closer up for one because in winter they have to wear hats and big jackets and what not. The camera shots are much better because it is easier to put a camera in a pool or gym than it is on an icy hill. I can also relate to the events in summer much better. That is why I like them more.

2010: Vancouver, Canada. I like both as I have interest in summer and winter sports. For summer I like swimming, diving, and gymnastics. For winter I like figure skating and ski jumping. That's just what I like best, I watch some other events, too. Location really doesn't matter to me. It's the athletes who are important.

Thanks for the info on the winter location in 2010! I was trying to remember, but was coming up with nothing. It is the same for me location wise. I don't care where it is, I just get interested in the stories of the athletes. I really like the same sports you listed. I also like seeing the bobsled races at the winter Olympics. I just read that Afghanistan got its first Olympic medal. The guy won a bronze, and the president of the country is giving him a house at the government's expense, and a communication company there is giving him $10,000. It almost makes me want to cry. I think we take it for granted that all the athletes in our respective countries (major countries that is) have these opportunities. But this guy who won a bronze is now a national hero in his country. I'm so happy for them.

Wow, good for him. Yes, winning at the Olympics can be extremely life-changing for some of the athletes. It's interesting to see the emotions that come up when the underdog happens to win. Of course, our athletes get rewards, too. Michael Phelps got $1,000,000 for winning his 8th medal. Not from the government but from his sponsor. It's peanuts compared to how much money he will be making (and the sponsor will be making) because of him winning so many medals.

I think it is cool that he is making money, because when his swimming career is over, he will still be young. So he can't count on swimming being there forever. This will allow him to save for the future, when maybe he takes a job coaching swimming. A lot of swimmer's careers are over after thirty, although Jason Lezak and Dara Torres of the U.S. are exceptions.

I prefer the winter Olympics. The skating is my favorite to watch. In the summer its the gymnastics. I really got into the ice skating. Its so beautiful to watch. Same for the gymnastics. I guess I am in awe of their grace because I am so clumsy, lol. I'm also afraid of heights so seeing those gymnasts do those high flying routines just amazes me.

The balance beam is the thing I know I'd fail on. It's a good thing the gymnasts are so short. Can you imagine doing all that stuff on a balance beam if you're six feet tall? Heck, even being 5'7 would be hard!

I live in the tropics so I am more in tune with the Summer Olympics than with the Winter Olympics. In my younger days, I was very active in sports. I used to play soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and squash, and I even represented my school in softball and volleyball. So I do have a lot of interest in watching the Olympics, in particular swimming, diving, soccer, badminton and table tennis. I also watch athletics, weightlifting and gymnastics. With so many sports, it is really hard for me to single out one which I like to watch best but my top three (not in any order) would be swimming, table tennis and soccer.

I am watching. For Summer I like track and field, gymnastics, and swimming. For the Winter my love is skating. It is so graceful. Location doesn't matter. I watch when they are on.

I don't like both of them. 10 years ago I like watch summer Olympics becase Chinese can't get too many medals. I like to see the Chinese athlete struggle in the game. But now it is quite easy for Chinese athlete to get many medal. I have lost interest of it. And I never watch winter Olympic games. Now the only game I like is NBA.

My favorite event is swimming, so summer for me. Also love beach volleyball, but everyone should know this answer, since I live in the land of sun almost year round. No cold weather for me now.

I like both the summer and winter Olympics the same. I am not sure where they will be held but I do like to watch them on television. I will have to keep an ear open and eyes on the lookout for the winter games.

I am not sure which ones I like the best. I like to watch occasionally but not consistently. Usually hubby's watching, I see something that catches my attention for a bit and I will be watching for some time, but that's about it. Both summer and winter have some things I enjoy watching, but I don't exactly have favorites. I'm not sure where the 2010 will be.

I don't know where the winter games will be, but I'd love to see the summer games held someplace like Sydney - where it'll be WINTER when they have them! I haven't seen too much - only when I've been at my mom's where its on the TV, and really I'm only interested in the Equestrian events, and I don't even know if they've shown any of them on the TV. My absolute favorite event, is another rather uncommon one, in the winter games, its where they cross country ski and then shoot at a target. I saw that back in the 72 or 76 olympics and was captivated by it. I was in school and there wasn't much else on TV so I watched the games that winter.

I love watching the Winter Olympics... eventhough my country doesn't have any participants... we do not have snow here and skating rinks are concentrated on the big malls found in the capital city... but i love the way the talented skaters strut their stuff on the rink... I read that the 2010 winter olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada...

It is a pity that I am always busy during the Olmpic games. In 2000, I was busy with college enterance examination. In 2004, I was busy with preparing the entrance exams for postgraduated school. In 2008, I was busy with applying to study aborad. I missed the deatails, however. I will also be exciting to know the Olympic gold result, which I get a message by my mobile. By the way, Michael Phelps did a pretty good work! He is awesome!

I watch more sports in the summer Olympics so I guess I like that better, but I enjoy the winter Olympics too. I'm excited that the games are coming to Canada in 2010 for the winter Olympics. I might try to go if I can get across the border into Canada again. Canadian officials have some wrong idea that I am some sort of radical rioter. I've been to protest marchers, but I've never been to a riot. Maybe I can get across anyway or have a Canadian sign for me. That's how I got into the country last time. Like I was a UPS package. I also think I might try to go to London in 2012. I've always wanted to see London being a theater geek and I have friends I could stay with in the British disability rights movement so housing would not be a problem.

I don't really follow either olympics but when I do watch it is the summer one. I like watching the swimming, volleyball and gymnastics. I don't watch the winter ones at all. I don't really get into any of the winter sports.

I really don't know where the 2010 Winter Olympics will be but being from the UK know all about them being here in 2012. I personally would rather the money be spent on something else but I have been watching and I think I prefer Summer Olympics. Ellie :D

It all begins, I believe, because some sports need to be played in winter. Now they are making it almost into two different sets of olympics. Its a matter of everybody trying to increase their share of work and enterprise. Winter is for sports that must be performed in winter and all the others go into a regular olympics.

I like both. Both offer different events. There are really too many to list that I like! I am not sure where the Winter ones will be held in 2012

People so far have said the winter ones are in Vancouver in 2010, and the summer are in London for 2012, but then in 2014 the winter Olympics will be in Sochi. I looked that up and it seems Sochi is in Russia. Hopefully the fighting between Russia and Georgia will all get worked out because any potential Olympic buildings are getting underway for construction...
