Nerdy towns

Recently the town next to where I live was found to be the least 'nerdy' town in the county. This is because there are fewer computer shops and model shops etc. in the town. Does this mean that there are no intelligent people there? Would you be proud or ashamed to have this distinction connected with your town?

Least nerdy? Is it okay if I find that distinction hilarious? I don't think that means there are fewer intelligent (or no intelligent) people who live there, I would suppose it is just an assumption based on the shops open for business in the town. Whoever's idea it was to call it 'least nerdy' really should hire somebody else to come up with a better description. I'm not sure I would be either proud nor ashamed, although if the town I lived in suddenly attracted the name of 'Moronsville', I would feel like moving.

I found it funny too but if I'd lived there I may have felt insulted.

Well, being a nerd as I actualy am, I would not like this distinction. I read a lot about computers and technology, and not having access to all these things in my own town would be very frustrating. But, I don't think that this means that there are no intelligent people 'cause there are different ways to get knowledge, like books and magazines. Ok, Internet is actually the best way to get information, but there are always alternative ways. ^^

The town council in this particular town have also decided it would be a good idea to close the library, now that really is worrying.

I think it means that a lot of people there are uneducated or just plain stupid. I've met several people from that particular town and some are intelligent and lovely people but a lot of them are a little bit dim. I really wouldn't want to live in the least 'nerdy' town in the country, it would make us sound like we were too stupid to use computers or to make models etc.

I am glad I don't live in that town. The description of "least nerdy" might lead me to think of it as the town with the least culture. If there are no computer shops or model shops or anything like that, does that mean there are clothes shops, charity shops and pubs? And, if it does, does that mean that the town is full of people who go clothes shopping and drink too much? I don't think I would like to live in a "less nerdy" town but nor would I like to live in the "more nerdy" towns. I am quite happy living in a mixture of charity shops and model shops.

I tend to agree with you. I don't think it's a distinction to be proud of.

Is it just the type of shops that they are describing? I wonder if "least nerdy" really means "least intelligent". As Crispy says, computers don't equal nerds. I don't know many people without one.

It doen't mean that there is no genius or something in your town. Lots of heros come from a place so-called "nerdy town". But I will feel sorry for that. There is nothing to be proud. Miami is famous for its beach; Seattle is famous for its ferryboat; Los Angeles is famous for its transport facilities; If my town is famous for its nerdy... It doesn't really feel good. On the other hand, what I take more secricious is the crime rate and air pollution. Maybe your town is a quite and safe place to relax. Don't bother there is no computer shops and the like nearby. It is very convenient to buy something somewhere else or online, isn't it?
