It's Almost Here! The Long-Awaited Rain! Yippee!

TS Fay has been slowly making it's way up the east coast of the U.S. after having a dizzy ride through Florida last week. It should be raining here any minute now!!! Ah, water! The elixir of life! We have had such incredibly dry weather in the past month that my poor veggie garden is suffering! Even watering it every day with a hose hasn't helped much. We have needed this rain so badly!!! I moved to this house last year and, as an avid gardener, I've been on a mad planting frenzy since that time. Last year was a dry one, but this past Spring looked promising because we got so much rain. But the summer has been pretty dry, again, and I'm worried about my little baby trees and bushes. Has anyone else been experiencing this drought? Is there any rain in your forecast? What measures have you taken to prevent everything from dying outside because of the incredible lack of rain?

Man! Thirteen hours now since it got to the border of where we live and still no rain here! It's south of us, north of us, east of us and west of us... but not here! Unbelieveable! They're saying that it's supposed to rain overnight with light rain tomorrow. We shall see!

You know, I posted this discussion 7 hours ago and the rain was JUST BELOW us heading north when I did. It just kinda hung around, just south of us, for HOURS, then started moving towards the northwest! It missed us! We've only had a few sprinkles of rain since then. TINY sprinkles of rain. The ground is dry as a bone again. Hopefully, though, we will get some. There's still a mass of rain just south of us and it looks like it just might come our way soon. If it doesn't, I'm going to have to get out there with my hose again. Sigh! I'm going out now to wash my car. That ALWAYS works!

Hahaha! I'm not sure which one is more precious these days! But, I might just take you up on that offer! I'm soooooooo disappointed so far. I posted this HOURS ago and, since that time, we've only had a few sprinkles of rain. It seems that, as soon as it got right below our town, the large blob of wet weather heading RIGHT AT US decided to veer to the west and go slightly north-west. Unbelieveable!!! I'm not giving up on it yet but, so far, I've very disappointed. Florida got so much, then Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina then, once it gets to northern Virginia, it veers north-west. I feel cheated! I told my husband, "You watch, as soon as it gets near, it's going to go around us and we'll stay dry." He told me that I shouldn't be so pessimistic, but that's exactly what's happened!!! Maybe I should keep my big mouth shut from now on???

Hahahaha! It's raining now, finally! Guess I owe you some gasoline! The price isn't bad at all these days, well, compared to a couple of weeks ago, anyway. It's down to $3.45 for regular, $3.55 for mid-grade, which is what I use. What are the prices like down your way?

We have the opposite problem here it's been either raining or over cast nearly all of August. I'm not growing anything outside at the moment only some chilli's in my kitchen so i don't know if it's been enough rain to keep a garden watered or not. My chilli's have gone really well though I've got loads, and have even put some in ajar with olive oil to make chilli oil.

you should be able to put jalapeƱo peppers in oil too, just remember to pierce them first so they don't float on the top and go mouldy.

I think we should start a petition for perfect weather ALL the time! Yep, it's almost always either too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet, too windy... you name it! Let's start a petition! That's really cool that you're growing chili peppers in your kitchen! I grow herbs inside, but that's about it. I did grow lettuce inside once and that turned out quite well. That chili oil sounds yummy! I'm going to have to try that. I have jalepeno peppers outside... dozens of them are getting ripe right now. Are they the same as chili peppers? I don't know. I also have one pathetic, lonely habanero pepper growing. They are supposed to be the world's hottest pepper. I plan to boil it and make a pepper spray to keep the deer and assorted rodents out of my garden.

At last! We are getting it here too in VA. My wife and I went to the lake last week to go fishing. It takes about an hour to make the trip there. When we pulled up to the launching ramp, both of us gasped at the same time. There was no water in the ramp. We just turned around and drove all the way back home. Smith Mountain Lake is almost five feet below normal. I don't do anything about things dying outside. We are not allowed to use water for plants. Somehow nature has a way of making these things go to sleep in times of drought. It always comes back. I've never had an outside plant die completely. Sometimes they look awful bad, but they usually will come back.

We didn't get it!!! We live in the tippy-top portion of Virginia. It was just below us, according to the radar screen. JUST below us. We even got a couple of sprinkles. But then... It veered off to the northwest! Not fair!!! Hopefully, we'll still get some. There's still a huge mass of this system just south of us and, with any luck, SOME of it will actually come through and not go to the northwest. I was so excited, too. I don't mind the 'normal' stuff going dormant, like grass or even some older perennials or trees, but I've just recently planted a bunch of baby trees and flowers that haven't had a chance to get their roots established yet. They need weekly deep watering until they've become established. Sigh. OH! I know how to make sure it rains! I'll go out now and wash my car! That ALWAYS works!!!

Well, Barb, I didn't exactly wash my car, but I DID go out and wet it down with the hose. I thought maybe, if I 'tricked' the rain gods into thinking that I was washing the car, they'd flip the rain switch to 'on'. It worked!!!!!It started raining about midnight and hasn't stopped yet! I'm so very happy! My trees, bushes, flowers and grass are all busy singing praises to the rain god, too! It's really cool -- the deep baritones of the oak trees down to the little bitty squeaky voices of the blades of grass. It's quite a racket, actually! You watch. I'll be begging it to stop if it keeps up for more than 24 hours! At least it's filling our lake back up. It won't flood since there were flood drains put in two years ago, so I don't have to worry about that. I had 3 turtles (river c00ters... geez they don't like that word here at myLot so I had to make it look funny... it's a TURTLE, guys!) that I raised since they hatched from my back yard that I released into the lake when we moved here last year. I had them in a 75 gallon tank but they were outgrowing it! They LOVED their new, bigger 'tank' (lake) and have even had babies!!! I saw some a few days ago, floating on some reeds that were floating around my pier. They looked like they needed fresh water. Well, they're getting it now! I might just get on my rain parka and go fishing later today! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!!

When you wash your car, it never fails to rain!! I did it other day and it rained the next day. When my grandson was here the week before school started, he wanted to wash the car the evening before he left. Papa said,"It's going to rain tomorrow, so there is no need to wash it." Well, we were supposed to get lots of rain. It didn't rain because he didn't wash my car. SO wash your car and bring your rain.

Hi MM here in the UK the weather is very on and off it will rain one day and be sunny the rest but if it gets too hot and sunny the only thing you can do is water your plants..really sprinklers are being discouraged because of how much water they do use...littleowl

Oh, I know about water restrictions! I've lived in enough places that banned the use of sprinklers, washing cars, etc. in times when it was really dry. But I live in the boonies now, mountain/country, and we have a well. No restrictions are ever imposed on well owners. The only thing we have to worry about is the well drying up. If I ever get to that point, I'll use buckets and go down to the lake (we own part of a lake) and water my plants with that. Hmmm, maybe I should invest in a pump to put in the lake so I won't have to use buckets and lug the heavy things around. I have fibromyalgia and lupus so my energy is very limited. You know, I've just decided to go buy a pump! We have a pavilion with electricity, so I could just plug it in there. Yeah! Awesome idea! Thanks! You've inspired me!
