Will History Repeat Itself?

As tropical storm Gustaf approaches the Gulf of Mexico and most of the weather models put New Orleans at the center of the storms path I have to wonder if New Orleans will actually take this one seriously! From all of the models, this storm will stay over the warm gulf waters for an extremely long time and will have ample opportunity to form into a super-storm like Katrina. My problem is; with landfall just over 4 days away I don't read anywhere about ANY preparations being made! I wonder, since NO blamed Bush for their lack of preparedness in Katrina, will they again suffer the same consequences by ignoring a real possibility? Since it is at the end of the month (same month actually)again, will the poor without means to evacuate be ignored by the state of Louisiana and left to fend for themselves? Will Bobby Jhindal take the same approach as his predcessor? Since NO elected the same man mayor, will he now turn his back once again on a potential disaster and force this city to relive one of her worst moments in history? Any opinions? Comments?

My opinion... Anyone who is stupid enough to build a city BELOW SEA LEVEL right by the ocean deserves to be washed out. Come on all it takes is a good storm or earthquake & they'll be flooded again. DUH Sorry, I have no sympathy for stupidity.

People need to learn, you can't beat mother nature. You might be able to fend her off for a while but eventually SHE WILL GET YOU!

Utah, Thanks for the comment. I kinda have to agree. Although I don't want to see anyone hurt I also see that it may be a little self-inflicted this time! I was hoping that after Katrina more New Orleans residents would take it as a wake-up call and move to friendlier climes. I realize there is quite a bit of history in New Orleans but then again when your city is below sea level and you are that close to a volitile coast you are really at the mercy of mother nature!

What didn't make the news last time was that Mississippi also got trashed during Katrina. The difference was that the Republican Governor actually did their job and handled the situation, while the Democrats in NO and LA blamed each other and then Bush because he didn't do their job for them. Here we are again... so do you think the democrats are up to the challenge this time, or will they blame Bush again for their failures?

Destiny, Thanks for the comment. At least this time LA has a governor who is preparing! Since I published this discussion I have read where Gov. Jhindal has put the NG on alert and is preparing for a madatory evacuation! Oh, did I mention, Bobby Jhindal is republican?

Oh wow, I thought it was the same bunch, but it is only NO who didn't learn the first time. With a republican governor, at least they have a better chance this time. NO is history, however.

There isn't anyone left there to evacuate. Only 40% went back. I was there to help rebuild the past two years and it didn't hurt the city much and the areas where it hurt the most have not been rebuilt and probably never will be. A few people have been trying to fix their homes but live in deserted neighborhoods. I doubt anyone will be ignored this time and everyone will be out before it hits.

I saw on TV that preparations were being made. The mayor of New Orleans (or perhaps it was the Govenor) was giving details of how this would be achieved. I did hear that these preparations were not sufficient to cover all the residents.

Whiteheather, Thanks for the comment. I believe the only person I have seen to have been addressing this was Gov Bobby Jhindal. I would hope that mayor Hagan would have learned from his previous errors and join in the preparations!

If they didn't learn their lesson last time the state's government deserves what ever the consiquences are. It is just sad that hundreds of thousands have to suffer for the Louisiana government's idiocy. In addition, if people aren't alreay getting outta dodge, then they HAVE to be as dumb as the government. It doesn't matter how poor you are. car or no car, money or no money, I'm sorry, if I was in the situation, I would walk out carrying my children on my back if I had to, and BEFORE the hurricane hit. My first duty in my life is to my family and to protect them at what ever cost and means nessesary, and if it means CRAWLING and them riding on my back to get them out of harms way, than thats what I do. but, I imagine people will stay, claiming they are just too poor to leave on their own and then expect the federal government to come charging in and save them and then scream for Bush's head when people die. If Louisiana suffers this time, as bad as they did with Katrina, then they have no one to blame but louisiana.
