I recently downloaded the FREE VERSION of AVG anti virus software. I do agree that It helped me in tracking down some deeply seated viruses, and deleted them. But, ever since I got this AVG installed, MY pc got slowed down. I waited for over a week to see that the speed picks up. But, futile. So, I deleted it. COMPLETE UNINSTALL. NOW, does it happen .. if one BUYS the AVG. is it slowing down the pc, because it is FREE?

I've been using AVG free anti-virus software for years and have never had a problem with it. Do you also have another anti-virus program on your computer? I know when I've tried the software that you have to pay for (both Norton and McAfee), they messed up my computer. I did a complete uninstall, but they have hidden files that were still a problem and I had to have a computer technician completely wipe everything out of the hidden areas. I'll never pay for another service again. No, AVG has been a favorite of mine for years and it has never given me any trouble, slowing down my computer, or anything.

thankyou. You have solved my problem. I think what you told from experience is wonderful. I am having the McAfee also, for the past few months, And, it was working fine. When I got a warning that MY ANTI VIRUS is not proper, I have to go for the AVG. But, when it caused slowing down, I got worried, and uninstalled. thankyou for the information. i would re-load AVG, after clearing and cleaning my PC of all the hidden files of McAfee and others. Pleased to PLACE your answer at BEST RESPONSE.

i use free AVG too and so far it's been working quite well. my PC slows down if AVG is running it scan while I use it. the moral of the story is let it run its scan when you're not there to use the PC.

I have the free version installed on my older computer and it runs fine. You might have another program running. That will cause the computer to run slower.

Speak for yourself. There are thousands of us out here that use AVG and won't use anything else.

Avg USED to be fast, free version or not in earlier versions (7.5xx and before). AVG 8 changed all that. When 8 first came out, it was like the Vista of AVG because it was slow, buggy and had problems. They've ironed out the bugs pretty much, but it's still SLOW. If you have an older pc, or a newer one without enough ram, it will slow you down. The new AVG has tons of stuff the old one doesn't (including antispyware, website check, etc), but that tons of stuff comes with tons of slowdown. The only real slowdown between the free and paid versions is that the download, update and install takes longer. I would hazard a guess and say the paid versions might be even slower then the free versions in general operations just because they have even more stuff under their hoods then the free version does. Try some other Antiviruses out there for speed. Antivir is okay, Avast runs on really old pcs (even still supports Windows 95) but can slow it down too, depending on configuration...) Or just get more ram if you're not maxed out. DDR2 ram today for most pcs is really cheap. Even a gig or two isn't pricey at all. Or if you're willing to pay for an antivirus, Nod32 is supposed to be rather lightweight (and faster). Try their free trial version and see if you like it. Good luck.
