Affirmative Action...Good or Bad?

Many people, including many African Americans, think that Affirmative Action is an program that perpetuates in minorities an attitude of entitlement and keeps them suppressed because they can be hired on the basis of racial quotas rather than having to get out and bust their butts to improve themselves and be hired for jobs on the basis of merit. What do you say?

Well I agree that it perpetuates the attitude of entitlement. Even worse though is that it results in the hiring of unqualified employees which subsequently fosters resentment in the more qualified coworkers. The quotas brought about often fail to take population into consideration. My wife was laid off by a school that was about to lose funding because it didn't hire enough minorities. There was little they could do as they'd already hired every black American teacher who had applied for a job, but they had to lay off the youngest teacher (my wife) to make room so they could seek out a black American to fulfill their quota. In the world of education it is foolish to PREVENT qualified teachers from getting a job because they aren't black, just as it would be wrong to prevent someone because they are black.

Affirmative Action amounts to discrimination against the most qualified workers who have worked hard to merit the jobs. They should not be turned away because of athey aren't a member of a minority race.

its absurd and patronising to hire someone who is not as qualified as the next candidate simply because they happen to be black. surely we should have evolved beyond seeing the colour of someones skin as a factor when hiring them

I agree with you. It is sad when people are forced to hire that way using quotas instead of by merit. Everyone should be judged by the same standards when applying for a job.

Obama is living breathing proof that afirmative action is a bad thing. Any white or asian with Obama's qualifications could never be a creditable candidate. That Obama is a candidate puts the entire nation at risk.

You have made a valid observation. Affirmative Action in electing someone for a public office is a recipe for disaster. If people are voting for Obama because he is African American rather than his qualifications they aren't using their brains.

It's intentions I guess were in the right place, but the results and actuality were bad. It forced companies to hire underqualified people and over look moew qualified people. companies in areas like mine, with almost no minority population whats so ever we're pretty much screwwed. What were they supposd to do, Import people from other areas? Make people lie in resume's about their heritige or race? And yes, I believe it did in fact encourage resentment and prolong the march towrds a post racial society by creating this resntment as well as prolonging it by simply keeping the issue of race in the spotlight and kept it being an issue. You can change the law, but legislation doesn't change a persons heart.

I agree Affirmative Action has not worked the way politicians hoped it would. Hopefully someone will take a second look and find ways to improve the situation making it better for everyone.
