A state of mindlessness.

We know that cancer is not contagious, yet there are some of us who will avoid touching cancer patients.
Deafness is not associated with blindness ,yet some people tend to speak in louder voices when speaking to blind people.
Point out these behaviours to these people and they suddenly awake and then realise their behaviours are not realistic.
There are various more examples, some being very evident and some subtle.
Do you experience or come across similar states of mindlessness or somewhat nonrational behaviour ?

You have just pushed a sensitive button here.
Alok, working in a healthcare industry has brought to me close to many such incidents and we have been working on it for some time now. When I say education of the mass, I mean these things largely. The 'feel good' part of living has to come from us, among us. 'A state of mindlessness' is but predominate in all spheres in life. Right from inside the family to the broader society. But I truly feel, that this doesn't make a man bad or good. We have been raised in that mind frame, that mental block which is doing this all. So rather than blaming myself I would like to blame the culture, customs, the environment, the society at large. But there has to be an end to this blame game. And I agree to what you have to say there. Making people aware is probably the most appropriate way to deal with this.
Great discussion, BTW!

Mimpi, I'm glad you liked the discussion. The role of the society and our influences from them does have its large share in this issue. The strange thing is that many of us at the same time have been educated and know of these things and yet tend to sideline it knowingly or unkowingly. Remind people when they are in this state of mindlessness and see the sheepish look sometimes on their face. Some may give lame excuses.
I'm sure you would have come across a lot of instances in your experiences in the health care industry. Thanks for sharing you thoughts and adding so much more on this subject.

Couldn't agree more with you.
Like we all know that we do not get AIDS by simple touching. Yet I doubt how many of us can actually shred off the inhibition and do that!!
So shocking!

Yes, whatever examples you have quoted are quite right. People do not douch cancer patients without pondering over the fact thta it is not contagious. People sometimes speak in loud voice with a blind, who is not deaf. In real life, when I am listening to music with my headphone 'on', I'll unknowingly speak a bit louder to others till such time I am reminded that my headphone is 'on' and I am only listening to music, not they.
Good Post!
