Can colleagues be friends?

Can colleagues be friends or do office rivalries — like promotions, incremements, closeness to the boss, etc — get in the way? Do such friendships also tend to fizzle out very fast? And, are such friendships better when they are between equals / with a junior / or with a superior?

Not all colleagues can be friends. Only some or a few. There are just some where you can just connect with and there are some will only be your colleagues and the relationship is until the office door.

Yes, colleagues can be friends. Some of my best friends are people I have worked with over the years. I'm not the jealous type & was ALWAYS happy when any of them got a raise or promotion. They seemed just as happy for me too.

my best friend now is my ex-colleagues, when we are in the same company, we are only friends, not too good, but after we are n't colleagues, we became a very good friends, maybe the factor that you said is problem, but i am still happy to find a friend in my work place, and i think if you treat people truly, they will do the same to you.
