Kids without coats!

This morning (as usual!) in UK the rain was bucketing down.
It's been such a bad summer three of my neighbours are building arks.
I watched the kids going to the local high school and the vast majority of them did not have a coat?
Is this poverty? No, it's just not 'cool' to wear a coat.
Some of the kids were dressed as though it was a hot summer's day (chance would be a fine thing!) and were obviously going to sit all day in very wet clothes during their lessons.
A few had flimsy attempts at umbrellas or pulled their blazer jackets over their heads.
What's going on?

Hi MichaelJay, Well my son went off to school with a lightweight waterproof on as warm but wet, my daughter probably went off to work wearing her boyfriends hoodie over her head even though she has got coats and my other daughter would have used an umbrella. It is a teenage thing. I remember wearing a hot leather jacket in the summer to look cool LOL but I was sweating buckets instead. I do insist they wear one though but I have seen the ones you mean. Ellie :D

im in the southwest of Arizona..desert basically. our average daily temp right now is about 105F. currently the exact opposite "fad" or "cool" thing is happening here.
it will be over 100F degrees and at least 1/2 the kids walking out off the school grounds are wearing sweaters..or more often those hoodies type sweaters!! sweat practically streaming down their faces and yet they wont take the dumb things off!

They just love to be opposite, don't they. It really is a teen thing. I suppose with me it was long hair, loon jeans, and cowbells. Happy Daze!

we split perfectly good 'normal' jeans to sew a piece of cloth in to widen out the seam.

Sadly that is the norm nowadays, teenagers are so blase and think it's so uncool to go around with clothes on! What I hate is when young guys walk around with their trousers hanging down and all their underwear on show, they say it's fashion I say it's actually bordering on indecency! I always see kids going without jackets even in the most coldest and wettest of weather, they just don't care or give a damn. They probably have coats at home but as I said they probably think it's not cool or should I say kewl to wear them and lose street cred!

Yes, I've seen them walking along in the rain with no jackets on and wondered why they do not wear something more appropriate for the weather. So, its not "cool" to wear a jacket?? Is that the same as stupid I wonder???

I think it is a teen thing. I was the same, in shorts during the winter months. They are old enough to make their own decisions, and if they want to catch pneumonia and die young, then that is their choice.
You'd think though that parents would at least provide warmer clothing for their kids and try to encourage them to wear them.

It's not just the kids! If I go into town to do some shopping, and I'm glad of my warm clothing because the weather has turned colder, or it's raining, I see adults walking about in teeshirts or strappy little tops.
It's just that people who stick to fashion and wear what they think is 'cool' have very little sense! They probably have to take a lot of time off from school or from work with colds and flu too.
I know parents can't force their children to wear something as 'uncool' as a light waterproof garment, but I think some parents don't even try. They probably would never consider going into a store and buying such a garment for themselves, or for their children to wear.

I know what you mean and no, it does not seem to be the cool thing, to wear a coat. I think that a lot of it as well is the kind of coat that they have, if it is not a cool coat then they will not wear it I used to have this problem with my eldest boy. He had a decent coat, but because it was not considered cool he would under no circumstances where it to school.
In my 6 year olds case though, he just hates wearing a coat full stop. I have to bully him into putting on in a morning, I mean it was chucking it down here this morning and he did not want to wear a coat. Of course I won and he wore it but he would not have the hood up, and when he came out the coat was not on.
