at least,in this fairly unique case!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1053718/Twin-girls-born-midnight-split-school--fall-different-academic-years.html
THe UK academic year begins September 1st,and these twins, one born either side of the midnight deadline of that date, may be split up in school as the elder twin comes under one academic year of birth, and the other just missed it! So the twin who beat the deadline would be able to start school aged 4,but her sister may have to wait until She's 5!
Have You ever heard of a case like this before? What do You think of these regulations?

While I don't have twins, my one relative does have twin girls. This is a unique case, but when you think about it, just because they're twins does not mean they are at the exact same stage. They are two separate people, and one may have matured a little faster than the other one. I think a child should be placed, or held back, according to where they are in their growth stage (mental, social, etc.) While one may be ready for kindergarten, the other one may not be. Just because they are twins does not mean that they should not be treated as separate individuals with their own separate needs. If the parents feel that both children are ready, despite the paperwork deadline, then they should contest it so that they're both able to go at the same time. My one child was 5 days on the wrong side of the deadline (for kindergarten) and it was suggested that she wait that extra year....then when she got into first grade they said she was too advanced for grade one and wanted her to skip a year ahead...go figure. So, despite, I think the parent knows their child better than the standardized school stuff, there are some rules that are not right and parents sometimes need to overstep the bounds. For every rule there is an exception.

Reading the linked article,This family have that all ahead of them regarding the Twins Developmental stage come school time....the Girls were born on the night of August 31st/September 1st past,so they're just over a week old now..it just seems daft that a rule like this can have such repercussions for a pair of twins born not an hour apart!

I have brothers that are twins. There is a special bond between twins that doesn't exist between other children. If they are separated at birth they feel as though part of themselves is missing. My folks would separate the boys from each other when they were babies and they always found each other. at least they do have plenty of time to get them into school at the same time.

We have the same cut off line here in the United States too, but I've never heard of twins being separated because of it. This is crazy, and I think they should let the twins start together. This could cause a stigma between the two, seeing as how if they hold the one back, the other would always be a year behind. I would talk to the school administration and have them actually think about how much psychological trouble they would cause over just a couple of minutes!!!

Sounds pretty stupid to me. I'm an identical twin, we are only 7 minutes apart and we had classes all through school. To split them up because of their birthday is dumb. I guess the school board has nothing better to do than to cause strife in a childs life. This is why I home school my kids.

How eeird - I was thinking about something like this the other day! I am not sure if it's good or bad as yes it is only fair because other children who are not related but born minutes difference like that would be expected to start at different ages but also it isn't really fair when they are twins and technically the same age so one would be in school longer just because he or she was born a few minutes later! x

I think that's pretty dumb.
I know a lot of schools (and parents) like to split twins up into separate classes, but to put them in separate grades entirely due to a few minutes different in their ages is ridiculous.
Every rule can be waived or amended in special cased. Obviously this is one of them.
