Do you have any rites of passage...?

With the changing of the seasons, I was wondering how many of you had certain rituals or traditions to take you into autumn? Not that I have any these days, but I used to. There were certain things we used to do like gathering fruits and vegetables to put away for the winter. We would gather hickory nuts or walnuts also. Some people stow away their warm-weather clothing for another year. I still do that one. What are some of the rituals your family or you will be observing to usher in autumn?

Very excellent question! We do collect walnuts and use the die to die things for Halloween. We have even used the die from the hulls to die our hair! Halloween tradition is very popular in our home. Squashes from the garden are utilized for decoration, seeds for eating, and the corn husks used as well. Yes, Halloween is a major right of passage in our household.

The fall season is my favorite time of the year, celticeagle! I used to be a country girl, and loved all of the fall activities.

Well ours would be putting away the old and getting out the new, so to speak..Things like the pool have to be taken down and I put away the swimsuits and beach towels..(this includes the swim toys that I put away) And for the chilly mornings, I now have out the fall jackets to keep us warm. And of course I get my plants ready for the cold by pruning or mulching or covering, depending on the plant..

It's the little things, carmelanirel, that let us know that we are indeed moving forward and not just marking time. Many look at the fall as an ending, but I always view it as a beginning.

Let's see. I put away winter clothes. Wind up the garden hose. Put the bed warmer on the bed. Open the windows until it gets really chilly. I am sure there are more I do, and more I should do.

Those are all necessary things, GG, and I'm sure your list will grow as the days go by.

We don't have anything that earthy or symbolic. Fall means football, period. The first Sunday in September, or there abouts, is the beginning of the NFL season.
